Hello All, We hope you enjoy Shaker Heights. It's a quick stop along the True Crime Garage Highway. Just wanted to take a look at an unsolved case through a different perspective and in a different way. This took a lot of time to put together and it was a lot of fun to work with all of our friends, most of them you know. These are the fantastic batch of friends who have been a part of the show and have help the show be successful. Most of the time this has been behind the scenes, so it was awesome to work with them front and center. I hope you'll take a break and stop off at the Shaker Heights exit and when you are done - we will see you on the other side! Cheers Nic

I was a little thrown by the narration, thinking "Wow! There's a Shaker Heights in Canada?" You know, with all the "oat"s and "oatside"s and "aboat"s.

I was so confused I thought this was in Ohio yet the boyfriend has a strong Canadian accent. Ok, this is different, but I like it so far.

Thoroughly enjoyed the format, thank you for putting this together. Would be nice to have a Part 4 for a little more discussion from Captain & Nic on the circumstances surrounding this case. Perhaps the a couple major factors in your minds that point one direction or another, maybe laid over a very basic timeline of events. It got a bit cumbersome keeping all the names straight between the 3 Episodes. What was the approximate distance from where Lisa's bike was found to where her remains were? The lack of evidence is disappointing. And I wish that Dan and his father had acted with a bit more sense of urgency considering what they heard.

I am loving this format. It must've taken ages to do and I appreciate all your hard work. Only downside is I only get one hour break at work (nurse on night shift) but it gives me something to look forward to tomorrow morning when I have some me time before i sleep P.S great music too captain 😍

Great podcast. I remember this well as I was 15 at the time. A lot of my friends went to Shaker and were directly affected. Just curious, are Canadians reading these police statements on the podcast? Definitely not a Cleveland accent, haha. Also, we all used to pronounce Arabica as Aira-beeka (not Arabikka). It's driving me crazy hearing it said 3 different ways here. Other than that, loving it.

I am halfway through the 2nd episode...I'll reserve judgement on this format until I've heard all episodes, but want to give big props to Nic and the Captain for continuing to push the envelope of true crime podcasting... still the best true crime podcast out there. One thing I noticed from Episode 1A...the guy doing the voice of Dan is obviously Canadian lol... I kept waiting for him to start talking "aboot" hockey and free health care:-) it was a bit distracting but he did a nice job otherwise.

Why is the boyfriend’s dad buck naked sending his 18 year old son out. I would like to investigate the original yell to response timeline? Any 18 year old lady like these killing someone with 21 stabs and not leaving a trace is unlikely. Someone much older.

Massive fan of TCG. I'm not so fussed about the new format - preferred to hear the banter as you both talk through theories, although for a change it's interesting and like that the Captain gets to feature more (loving that voice) TCG is my gym & driving habit, highly addictive.

Everyone involved put in so much time and effort and it SHOWS. I was so excited to hear the voices of some of my other favorite podcasters! People seem to have polar opposite views on the format but I have to say I’ve really appreciated the opportunity to think for myself while listening and come to my own conclusions. Great job and I can’t wait to hear the rest!

Great job on the change of pace! Hats off and much respect for the amount of work this must have taken. I'm a fan of the traditional TCG format, BUT I think you guys did a great job on this as well, and I just made it through the first 3 episodes. The only thing I don't like...I'm fiending for the conclusion, waiting on pins and needles!

I love the idea but only like the end product. Listening to someone read an interview just isn't the same. But I'm still enjoying it and was hoping you'd drop the 3 other episodes this week. I don't want to wait. Very intriguing case.

My last post had a typo but my point was Dan’s dad seems sketch. Were the sink traps in Dan’s house checked for blood? 21 stabs? This is not the work of one kid. How many friends do these bike riding, cigarette smoking, Tussin chugging kids have “?

So my thoughts on this have always been that the timeline was wonky with when they said they heard the scream and when Lisa had planned to be over. If that was her screaming, wouldn't she have been very earlier for their little late night rendezvous which was supposed to be between 12:30-1? What if the scream was totally unrelated? Wasn't it Dan that offered the correlation between the scream and Lisa's death after he had found her body? Didn't he question why she would have been there so early? If she was supposed to signal she was there with pebbles on the window, and presumably she didn't throw any since she was supposedly already dead, why did he go outside in the first place where he was in a position to discover her body? My guess is, Dan killed Lisa, and he lucked out that there also happened to be an event that night (the scream) that got some attention from his family that raised alarms. His mother actually believed the scream to be somewhat unremarkable and said it faded quickly. Maybe it was just someone creaming as they drove past in a car like one of them postulated. So I think Dan made it up as an alibi for him killing her. That or....Dan told his dad what he had done and his dad helped him concoct the story. Either way I don't think the mom was involved, but she did hear the scream and verified the timeline, which leads me to believe the scream was unrelated but cleverly used as a way to have a person unrelated to and with no knowledge of the crime verify the time line. Hope that makes sense.Sorry for my "dizzying intellect" :p As for a motive, teenagers can be fickle, and their hearts are often given away freely and rapidly. What if Lisa came there that night to tell Dan in person (because she did care about him) that while he was in the hospital she developed feelings for someone else? But Dan thought she came there to have sex like they had done before. The unrealized expectation coupled with his fragile mental state sent him in a rage and he killed her.

"Why is the boyfriend’s dad buck naked" Dear Cookie, Sometimes, when people have sex, they get naked. Also, sometimes, after fornicating with a sexual partner, people go to sleep at nighttime when it is dark outside. Also, some people sleep in the nude. I hope this helps. Salutations and stuff, Uncle D.

Haven't finished all of them yet, but this was a great way to turn a bunch of police reports into something we could listen to without getting bored. I'm sure this took a lot of work, and I really appreciate it! My only issue so far is that the woman voicing the boyfriend's mother didn't quite sound natural. It was very obvious she was reading her part. Hearing everyone describe the evening reminds me how different things were in 1990. I'm thinking "Why is everyone over at their friends' houses late on a weeknight?" Then I remember that you couldn't text or instant message your friends back then. A lot more interaction took place in person.

I have found these episodes pretty much a wash. The actors aren't that great --- they are just reading a script, and it sounds like it; the various characters don't really seem to own the words. I also find it takes a lot of effort to put the action together --- I prefer your more traditional effort. Glad it was fun for you, though.

The format really pulled me in to the story and left me not knowing what to believe, following the clues from the interviews with the police. The voice actors did great and the accents or mispronounced coffee shop didn't bother me. Count me as another fan of the format! Can't wait for the new episodes!

It is clear how much work you all put into this. Really well done! I don't mind the change in the format, but I keep finding myself wanting you two to jump in and offer some clarifying information. Why was Dan in the mental hospital? Is the coffee shop the only place in town? Is going to class optional for these kids? How does one have a party and invite all of these kids over the day they get out of a mental hospital to drink cough medicine and smoke cigarettes on a school night??? So many questions. Thanks for what you two do:)

Loving this format. And also your voice actors. I can hear that they are trying to be impartial in their delivery and I appreciate it. You are letting us try to puzzle it out with the bare evidence (and a little direction from Nic). More like this, please. And hoping we get a full on discussion afterward.

Although I appreciate the time and effort that went into creating this, I prefer your usual format. I felt like the story and facts got lost in the narrative, and Canadian accents. I hope you go back to the original format.

Wow, people need to calm down on the angry comments! This is a cool little combination of people to use as voice actors! I wish people would just listen and stop being so rude when you try something new. And if they read, see its just a special and not a "new" format. Anyways, can we get a credits list for who is playing which character? I am not familiar with all of them and would like to know. Thanks

After listening to the first three episodes then reading quite a few articles on the case it's crazy there isn't a shred of good evidence in this case. No weapon, no bloody clothes, no witnesses, nobody without an alibi....nothing. I'm surprised they even got Kevin Young to trial.

People sound so rude and entitled in the comments. I think this was such a creative way to go about this case because there’s so many players. It paints a better picture of how, when and where the story escalated. I also never heard of this murder before nor is there a lot of info online, so definitely a good one to cover! Good job

I love your show and have told a lot of my friends and family about it. I love all of the hard work you guys do on a regular basis, but I just couldn't get into this experimental format. I'm trying to stick in there (I saved the episodes up so that I can binge-listen) but I'm not even 15 minutes into this first one and I'm already bored. Reading investigatory documents is very dry which is why your regular format is so much better.

So many questions- will we ever know why dan was at that clinic? Seems an important detail. I also agree with someone else- I was a teen in the 90’s but me & my friends didn’t hang out this late on school nights, or call someone’s house at 11pm. Also, seems like they didn’t really have to go to class & nobody’s parents seem to care where they were or what they were doing. We all snuck out of course but leaving school wasn’t a normal option. Dan planned to have ppl over late on a school night- yet his dad wasn’t fully asleep yet

I was thrown off at first, but was quickly hooked. Kevin Young sounds a lot like Damien Ecols. I’m glad they acquitted him. It doesn’t sound like he got the help he so desperately needed. Is this case still open, or is it a matter of the PD thinks they got the right guy, even though he was acquitted, and never bothered to investigate anyone else? Will there be a follow up episode where Nic and the Captain discuss it? I hope so.

It ends with the quotes from Dans letters to Lisa and a huge clump of speculation as to what really happened with out any discussion.. will there be more? So I found this on Dan Dreifort and I am not saying he is the one or he is not the one. I am just saying it is very intriguing information. Found on Dan Dreifort's own website @ https://dandreifort.com/ Read the last sentence, I clipped it from the website. Bio PART 7: Dan Dreifort's mom (Mrs. Dreifort, to you,) speaks out. My son inherits his great mind, most of his talent, good looks, and (obviously) his beautiful hair from his mother. He was a tough kid to raise, but I think his father and I did a good job, considering. He has achieved a great deal but has not come anywhere near exploiting his immense potential. He is extremely loveable (bordering on the charismatic). Only three major faults come to mind at the moment: he can't spell, sometimes he threatens us with nonsupport in our old age, and the last is a dark secret known only to the immediate family.

I really wanted to like Shaker Heights but it was just too much repetition. You would give an overview of a statement and then you would narrate the transcript of the actual police interview. You should have edited it in such a way that we didn't have to listen to the same information twice. And you don't have to read the ENTIRE transcript, i.e. were you read your rights, did you understand them, are you under the influence..... Sorry gave up after episode two. I could have done a KILLER edit of this podcast to make it much more tolerable. I love your show, been listening for years but this was a bust. Please don't do this format again.

Listened to 3 of the eps so far and...gonna have to pass on the rest. The new format is ok for one or two episodes, but I’m not interested in listening to six hours of read transcripts. I’ve never heard of this case before and it sounds truly fascinating. Just wish there was the traditional narration to go with it.

I really, really enjoyed this podcast until the last episode. It had a tragic ending with no sort of update on the case (is it still open or considered cold?) and it gave like 2 pieces of evidence again the Dan Dreifort two that seemed pretty incriminating, but circumstantial. Maybe I missed something because I was listening while working, but was there any DNA found? And the "The father did it" thing was just kind of dropped. Like I said, I really enjoyed it- just wish we could have a 1-2 episode wrap up/update.

Loved what you put out Nic and The Captain but I felt I was left hanging. Why was the boyfriend put in a mental hospital in the first place? What has he done with his life? I so wanted to know more about him. Tragic that the acquitted “ weirdo” died at age 44.

Good job, gentlemen. This was an engaging, informative and creative series. Only drawback, as others have pointed out, is the Canadian accent. No biggie, though. Hope you throw in a series like this once in a while in the future. If it's not for everyone, oh well. Seems like plenty of people enjoyed it and I doubt you're at risk of losing listeners for being too creative. Keep up the good work.

Truth is I don't know why exactly Dan was in treatment. Probably placed there by his parents for any number of reasons drugs, depression, behavior issues or all of the above. This was a little tricky because you are getting the outcome during the narration through out. So it seems if you are looking for answers on the final read they are not really there. In the end Kevin Young was the only one ever to be arrested and tried for Lisa's murder. They did not get a conviction. Kevin died at 44 and we speculate these charges and trial likely destroyed his life. Dan, Dan's father and Tex - together or alone are just as good of suspects as Kevin. They had no more on Kevin than what they had on the other three. It is possible some of the teens fashioned their stories to lead the police away from one possible suspect and then on to another. Dan was liked, Kevin not so much. What is missing from this story is physical evidence and that was what was missing at the trial as well. What the hell was going on down there in Shaker Heights is a remark found in the police transcripts from a LE official. What was going on is small town cops doing a great job taking care of small town problems. When a murder of one of their own was committed by one of their own they reached out to the experts for help but it was only after they decided based off of the teenagers statements that Kevin was their guy. It's still unsolved and many in Shaker Heights consider the case closed as they still believe that Kevin did it. As you can see he just wasn't that good of a suspect. Cheers Nic

This is a really sad case. No justice for Lisa. I think the only thing Kevin was guilty of was being a troll and an asshole. As Summer wrote above, this reminds me of the Memphis Three case. Why did they dismiss Tex as a suspect so quickly? I know the Colonel wrote above that there was no evidence at all, so I imagine that they didn't find even any emotional diaries at his home (I believe they searched it). Tex did not have a good alibi, was known to have been in the area around the time, and knew that Lisa was coming over. He is my #1 suspect. I really enjoyed hearing the interview with the FBI and LE on interview techniques, very interesting. Too bad the FBI agreed that Kevin was #1. That psychologist at the end sounded totally full of shit. I have worked professionally with psychiatrists in the past and it's a huge no-no to attempt to diagnose people you haven't met. I believe he said he never met Kevin, yet tried to say he has impulse control disorder etc. from what it sounded like, Kevin didn't have a known record of violence, and an older ten with that condition surely would. Sounded like the doc just tried to impress the cops by throwing a bunch of psych terms out there.

Cooooool. This was a nice departure. I am glad to see you collaborated with Renner. I like that dude. I wish you guys could do five episodes a week because I drive so much. Selfish, I know, but I really love your show, your dynamic relationship, and the fact you don’t dwell on one case, but provide updates as appropriate. On a side note, Stitcher seems to speed up the shows. Is that accurate to say? Anyway, I love your show. You are the best true crime pod cast out there, though because you aren’t jamming out enough episodes I have been forced to find others. (I kind of feel like I am cheating on you guys) I started listening to TCATT, which have a similar vibe as you two (but not as good). Anyway, it’s cool to see (hear) you guys loving this. I hope your success doesn’t become burdensome. Keep up the great work. I am sending beer $$ soon, I promise.

Dan seems like a primary suspect, the one thing that saved him was getting an alibi from the parents. Family alibis are always in question in my book. Then you have the conspiring among the friends. Seemed like some tunnel vision found its way in this case. IF, I had been in a mental hospital for a month and my girlfriend told me should come by and see me that night, with the implication of sex, I THINK I WOULD REMEMBER THAT AND EXPECT HER. He keeps saying that he vaguely remembers he told her to come by. He then finds her bike and thinks, that might be her bike. WHAT!?

He keeps saying that he vaguely remembers he told her to come by. He then finds her bike and thinks, that might be her bike. WHAT!?

I hated this so much.... Only 6 parts?? You hooked me after the first half hour and I just wanted more and more of this case. I would have loved to hear the trial as well. Great job guys!

At first I wasn't sure about the format, but I ended up really enjoying it and trying to puzzle out the answer as the episodes went along. Nice job mixing it up guys!

Hey guys, love the show, but wasn't a huge fan of this. Whilst it was interesting in a sense, I think a follow up episode from you both would go a long way to putting this all into context. I missed learning about the facts of the cases and hearing your ideas on the suspects. Obviously this was all witness testimony, but an account from the cops on scene would have been nice. I feel like I need to find another podcast episode featuring this case to get a better understanding of what actually happened and what police found along the way during their investigation. Thanks for putting so much effort into this as it couldn't have been easy. I'm heading to the US in April/May for my daughter's Cheerleading Competion and will be in Orlando during Crime Con, hope to catch you guys at the show or later as I'd love to buy a round of drinks.

I might as well throw in my two cents along with everyone else. Format took me about an episode to get into. Then I found it quite gripping. You need patience to appreciate this series. But if you have it you will be rewarded. I found it good but lacking in details like why mental hospital and how did Kevin Young die so, well, young. If James Renner wrote the script Nic read between interviews then this is typical Renner, making a big deal out of some minor things and trying to throw doubt on the suspect to make it more gripping. I’m not a Renner hater like some are, but he does like to seductively paint pictures for his audience to lap up (“Ray Gricar may be sipping a cocktail on the shores of Lake Bled in Slovenia”) and this is no exception. You’ve had some different formats lately like interviewing Maura Murray’s sister, and the six part Jonbenet series with different music etc to usual, so it’s hardly a new thing for TCG to have a new format. But I would love a bonus episode with your thoughts and banter. Like your Black Dahlia episodes with the interview which was kinda boring but hearing you two sum it up by yourselves after it,puts yourselves in the audience’s (i.e. our) shoes, and we (the listeners) can relate to your discussion about the topic from the same perspective that we the listeners have been sitting there listening to it all ourselves. It’s more of an intimate connection between Nic/Captain and us your audience, that way. Anyway I thought Kevin Young was a pretty good suspect. Him telling the LE man about what the killer would do after the crime, all in the third person, was creepy. And he had threatened to kill dan/Lisa at least once or twice. Coincidence? Either way I agree there was no actual evidence against him, or anyone else for that matter. But my money would be on him if I had to bet. Cheers guys and I look forward to the next episode in the usual format.

I am almost through episode 5. I just find it odd that these kids were running around the neighborhood and checking out the crime scene and even approached Lisa's parents. I grew up during the same time as these kids and I can tell you my parents wouldn't have allowed this, my friends' parents wouldn't have allowed it. Maybe its the mom in me but why are all these kids running around the neighborhood so late at night? I also think its is a strange coincidence that two of the teens involved in this case were in the hospital for psychiatric care, I don't think that is a common occurrence. Makes me wonder what exactly was going on in this town.

It looks like everyone is split about the format but I love it and the music. This clearly took a lot of time and effort to execute. Well done! My feedback is similar to others - the Canadian accent threw me off at first and the pronunciation of Arabica (minor I know). Would love a follow-up episode where y'all break everything down and share your assessments of the case! Oh and I'm dying to know why Dan was in the mental institute??

It was different which was good. Wasn’t familiar with story before. After listening to the whole thing I had an idea in my head of what these people looked like. Boy, did I miss the mark. Kevin looks like a normal kid. Dan looks like a wacko. Too bad they never got the killer. Sounds like Dan would have been a good suspect as well. But in the end there really was no evidence.

This guy Kevin sounds like a neonazi, even by his own statements. And y'all are describing him as "the weird kid at school who wore Metallica t shirts"? Regardless of whether he did it or not, people didn't dislike him because he was weird, people disliked him because he was hateful, misogynistic, and racist.

At first the change in format threw me off, but by episode two I was hooked. Wish it had finished with the usual analysis of each suspect and the viability of their guilt, but all in all, great job!

I have three possible theories on how she died after listening to this episode: 1. Dan Dreifort killed Lisa. His dad covered up for him in his statement because he didn't want his son to do time in jail. 2. Dan Dreifort and his dad together conspired to kill Lisa. Dad was a weirdo, possibly abusive, and there are mixed reports on what he thought of his son's girlfriend. Maybe he did it to teach his son a lesson about having people over, or maybe they were both in on it together. 3. Dan paid off Tex or another friend to kill Lisa. I like this idea the best because I'm just not sure if the mom would have corroborated the husband's and son's stories or not. I doubt that Dan told his friends what really happened because there's no way all of those kids would have kept a secret like that for so long. I think he probably had his friends over and said "Who do you think could have done this?" and quietly got them all on his side. Either way, it's a creepy story and I hate that they never got it solved.

Loved these episodes but I wish I would have heard more from Nic and the Captain. I wasn't necessarily sold on it being Kevin Young until the interview with the police. It seemed like the kids were making a plan to set him up. Some of the stuff he said in the interview was really creepy and just proved that he was sick in some way.

Yes this was just a 6 part series. We did a discussion episode on Off The Record. Its on stitcher premium which you can sign up for a FREE month. I encourage everyone - sign up for the free month, listen to as much as you can and then cancel it before the bills roll in. It's the American way! Cheers Nic

Really enjoyed this project, you guys did a lot of hard work on it and it was a fun change. The entitled nitpickers on here make me nauseous. They all have an opinion on how this incredible podcast should be done. I'd like to see them do better. If you don't like it, don't listen.

Great job. I was the same age as these folks. It was very normal to be out and about late night. We were more independent and closer to adults, than today's kids. Most of us were in bars, legally and had responsibilities, well before the kids of today. The thing that is not different? Rich families got away with murder. Always, and forever. Great listen. Odd to see so many folks not being able to adapt to the style. Must be millennials.

Very interesting. I think a last episode with just discussion would have improved the series. I was sort of waiting for that and was a little let down when you didn’t do it. I think all the theories skip over the most obvious one (to me) - that Lisa was killed by a random sex criminal in a crime of opportunity.

Always love a change in the format! I mean I love the usual Nic n Cap’n but the way these episodes were done totally threw me and I was wondering how it would go,ended up completely loving it and I could literally picture in my head these interviews as they happened like reading a book or watching a movie. Brilliant job as always you guys!
