24 year old James Holmes entered the movie theatre, along with hundreds of others, for the midnight premier for the much anticipated film "The Dark Knight Rises." James does not plan to sit and enjoy the movie nor does he intend for anyone else to enjoy it. Shortly after the start of the movie James goes on a homicidal rampage against all in attendance. Tonight we discuss one of the most senseless and disturbing acts of public violence in recent history.

Hi! Good show on the Aurora shooter. I read the book "The Spiral Notebook". Did you enjoy it? I found it frustrating at times. The authors seemed to have an agenda and it seemed they fit their opinions into their interviewees, as well as a lot of the content. It was more of a book on their personal observations, rather than hard facts that are study based. I had to force myself to finish it so I was curious about your opinion. Also, I believe it was the Captain (I apologize if I have it backwards) who made the comment about the NFL and breast cancer awareness vs. mental health awareness. It is so true. So many people are left out there without real help. It's a huge problem in our prisons and homeless population (as well as other walks of life). There is no where for many of these people to seek help when they have no means. Thank you for making that point about awareness. Love your show!! I'm originally from Michigan... Oops "up north" and I forgive you for being OSU fans but I listen anyway. :o) Keep the episodes coming... True crime junkies need you!!

Hey guys, Love your podcast!!! I really enjoyed this weeks episode and I just thought I would tell you guys about an interesting connection with that case and my home town. Jessica Ghawi, was one of the victims in the movie theatre that night but she happened to survive a gun man who opened fire in the Toronto Eaton centre (huge tourist mall in the centre of Toronto) food court about two month before on June 2nd, 2012. The gun man killed two and injured 5 but she was lucky to survive, she then went on to write in a blog about how blessed she is to be alive and how it effected her life, only to be involved in this tragedy shortly after. A lot of people were comparing this to final destination, because what are the odds of being in two mass shootings within about two month of each other. http://www.cp24.com/mobile/news/woman-killed-in-colo-escaped-eaton-centre-shooting-1.886953 Thanks guys and keep up the amazing work! I enjoyed the spiral notebook but I could have done without the intermittent comments from random people. I found that to be pretty much just fluff. That would have been a tough book to write as they did so during the 2 1/2 year gag order. I found the yoga stuff quite interesting. Cheers, Nic

Wasn't part of the conspiracy something strange about there being a part of the movie Dark Knight Rises where if you paused the movie at a certain point it had a detail about the shooting??

TCG, I love your show. I am not trying to split hairs or start a debate, but an AR-15 is NOT an "assault rifle."

Truth serum is sodium pentathol. Sodium pentathol is not LCD. Also do something about the captain's speech and expression abilities because it gets hard to listen to - I don't know if you don't drink that much beer since you often blame it on it, or practice public speaking or read more literature- like classics, novels, such stuff, not internet blogs and comments (like this one)... Also please avoid statements of great argument- like for example is the fetus a human being that has to be ascribed full human rights of a born person and counted as a victim and so on... Also - fuck those if your state's citizens that gave Ohio to Trump, I would leave such a state in a heartbeat if I was living there...

Big Hec, The Hollywood bank shootout was crazy. Several years ago I had a buddy that was on the Columbus PD's In Tact team. This is the squad that buys drugs from people and then kicks in their front door the next day. These are typically pretty hardcore dudes. He was fascinated by the North Hollywood bank shootout and I had little knowledge of it having only seen some short news clips. He let me borrow one of those "unauthorized documentaries" which contained a ton of audio and video that I had never heard. It blew my mind and terrified me at the same time. Truly interesting stuff. I'll add it to our list, maybe next season. Cheers, Nic

Nicholas, You're absolutely right the AR-15 is not an assault rifle by definition but in our defense it is often referred to as one. I own some hand guns but in all actuality I'm very much a layman when it comes to the full spectrum guns. We know you dig the TCG so no need to cover before presenting something. All good and thanks for the clarification. Nic

Hey, Naw, Veselin - nothin' but love for the Captain. Although I also noted the the fetus comments, no need to hate on my Capt'n. All are entitled to an opinion; if anything is for certain, we need to embrace our rights of diversity of thought, race, creed, lifestyle, etc., wholly in our current environment in the US and practice acceptance. ALWAYS a TCG advocate and donor; LOVE thy jib [& Captain's voice!]. <3

I turned this on in my car, and my brother (who has never listened to a podcast) found himself saying " I never knew that" a lot. My brother loves the show, and is going to start listening to it with me! I loved this show and was really surprised about some of the details, simply because I was in high school when this happened so I tried to tune it out because of how terrifying it was.

I strongly believe that your mental health provider should be able to upload a concerned status on a patient. This ideally would connect to weapons purchasing companies and law enforcement agencies. This would HELP decrease unnecessary weapons sales to people with a mental health emergency or major concerns. This would also be enlightening to law enforcement before engaging with a citizen that may be on medications or concerning health issues.

It is hard to find the words to describe this senseless act of violence! So many people were impacted, in one way or another, including the friends and families of the wounded, the permanently injured, and the families of those who's lives were taken - just enjoying a night out at the theatre. I can imagine the aftermath, pain, and sadness that followed. This podcast is well done, and covers the events leading up to this terrible crime, as well as the arrest, interrogation, and trial. Our hearts go out to the friends and family members who continue to cope with this terrible crime, for those who continue to suffer physically and emotionally, and for those who's lives were taken.

I'm just nearing the end of this episode (I know I'm a little behind), and I have a question that hasn't been answered yet... How was he able to purchase the amount and types of weapons/ammunition, especially the ones purchased on-line, yet non of the organizations (FBI, CIA, Homeland Securit, etc) were alerted by these purchases? You would think that alarms would've sounded somewhere... Anyway, I love your podcast! I love this crime stuff, and unsolved mysteries and trying to figure it out! I did listen to your 100th, and sad to hear that the Captain won't be there. Keep up the excellent work Nic!

Hi Vera, Yes you would think red flags would go up but those were legal purchases. I can't remember because it's been a while but I think most of his purchases were on bulk ammo dot com but in all fairness last time I purchased ammo I bought 1200 rounds, it was on sale. Cheers, Nic

The system failed him terribly. He took it upon himself to get help and then he stopped. A good psych would have called to check up on him and get him back in the office. Mental illness has such a horrible stigma attached to it. We need to be talking about it more as a society. There is nothing wrong with needing to get help. There needs to be more accessible ways for someone to get help. When you are feeling desperate, you are not going to remember an 800 number to call. 911 needs to be set up to handle mental health calls too (maybe they are, not sure). Anywho, great show as always!!!!!!

I think this tragedy deserves a second round in the garage. There are so many unanswered questions. 1) Aside from contentious gun rights v. gun control arguments, what extraordinary purchases WOULD have alerted officials to Holmes behavior? Where did Holmes get the money to buy all this gear ?! 2) Aside from general thoughts of homicide, what sparked Holmes desire to kill large numbers of people as efficiently as possible. Wikipedia describes the gunman’s apartment as decorated with images of Batman comic books. Is there any significant information regarding Holmes identification with the character of the Joker, when it began, did he express this online or with therapists. 3) If there is any link between Adam Lanza and James Holmes, isn’t it Lanza and Holmes severe social isolation as well as their interest in mass killing worth looking into? 4) If any conspiracy theory is to be investigated, what about the concept of a ‘Manchurian Candidate’. Specifically, the similarity between the arrest of Holmes and that of John Lennon’s assassin, Mark David Chapman?
