Just finished this one and full of feelings. Great interview with the security guard, it was fascinating to hear his recollections and how it has impacted him to this day. It makes me so sad for D'wan that this total stranger seems to care way more about solving this than his own mother. I have an 8 month old, so this one really hit me in the heart; a child is not a disposable item!! I know you said her mother fully supported her during the investigation, but I wonder if there was any underlying tension in that relationship (shades of Casey Anthony) that made her pick that particular place where her mother worked to stage the disappearance. I will hope against the odds he's alive and with better people. Time to hug my baby now 😢 . Fantastic music in this one, so haunting and fit the subject material so perfectly.

How is this lady not in jail. I was going to go online and try to see a picture of this woman but I figured I'd throw up and vomit. There is a word called Karma. I am hoping it rears it's ugly head at some point in this lady's life. When that Karma does come I hope it's not quick and easy either. I hope it's very long and very painful. I don't even like to say she gave her kid away. Because that presents the chance that D'wan ended up with another person. Considering anyone would probably be better as a mother than her that's easy on her. I would love for D'wan to be alive and living a great life. However we have to put it out there and expose this lady as what she is and say she most likely killed D'wan. Then to top off her evil sundae with the Cherry on Top of The Cops messed it up and didn't care and thrown the Race card out there is even worse. They tore apart the mall and looked all over the place for a fictional person because D'Wan was never at the mall. You asked the ex security guard in the case what could have the cops done better. I will tell you the one thing they could do or the D.A. could do charge this lady with murder. Rather than let her get away with murder waiting for a body or DNA or someone to talk all these years later just charge her. Take your chances on the circumstantial case that she made this whole story up. Even if you don't arrest her try to dig up something. Put it out there that you will offer immunity to anyone who wasn't directly involved in his murder but can provide evidence against her.

I am left dumbfounded. How was the mother not charged? She should have to answer for all these discrepancies under oath not in some loss prevention office. Are we talking about the perfect crime here or an impotent district attorney?

I lived less than 1/4 mile from Wonderland Mall in 1994. The accusation that Livonia did not do everything possible to find D'wan is ridiculous. Helicopters flew over for hours that night. Mounted police searched nearby parks. The city spent an unbeleivable amount on the search and it is likely he never was in Livonia at all. The whole metro area was gripped by this story all through the holidays.

At John z It was mentioned in the intro, taken from the police report she D'Wan's mother said originally he disappeared near the Kay Bee Toy store in the mall. Later she said closer to the Target store. Her story changed a couple of times that day and there is a problem with trying to make a timeline. It's likely Dwanna (the mother) arrived at the mall without DWan and 30-60 minutes after she said she arrived. Nic

John that's a great question. There was a rumor going around at the time that the mothers boyfriend did not like nor wanted anything to do with DWan. Narrowing down when he was last seen has been tricky, this I believe because his mother and the boyfriend were probably the last to see him. Obviously a different time then later told to police. Nic

185I cant help but think that this mother, as well as Kyron's stepmom Terry the Turtle, may have sold these children?? Its a painful thought but WHERE did they go? Terry the turtle was seen having lunch with the 'landscaper'? Just a thought. I am hooked on your show. As forensic science graduate (1985) who never went into law enforcement, these stories are addicting AND very well researched. Great great job! Have recommended often!

D'Wan has been missing since 1994, so the idea that the mom will be charged is somewhat ridiculous, not going to happen. Couldn't build a case then, can't build one now. It is east to pick at her story, but the reality is, the police need actual evidence that points to her either killing or selling the child, that does not exist. So we can all feel somewhat confident that she did something wrong, but we just don't know what, and neither did the police.

I would be happy to recount the last time D'wan was seen and what his mother was doing the day before and the morning of the incident. If anyone was interested.

John Z - there was note in local paper D'wan was last seen (by someone not connected to the family) with his mother, earlier that day on morning hours in laundry point in the city. That gives enormous small timeline for his disappearance.

I find these cases of mothers 'losing' their children to be so haunting. I can recall several cases over the years of women going to the store/pool whatever with their kids, and coming home without them. The Catherine Hoggle case out of Maryland is particularly maddening. It just blows my mind that anyone could be so stone cold to (presumably) murder their own child, then just casually roll up like, " I have no idea where my kid is". Breathtaking in its audacity, really.

Hi, Was just wondering if there was more than 10 minutes on this case? I can't seem to download and was just seeing if others only heard the intro? Thanks and I love this podcast. Having a 4 year old myself this one touched me esp hard.

I feel so sad for this child! Gut feeling is he never made it to the mall that day and something terrible occurred before hand.

The mom or her boyfriend most likely accidentally killed the boy the night before or the morning of the mothers mall visit. The trip to the mall was just to pass the blame. If the mom didn't kill him she knows what happened to him. It's a shame she is not wasting away in prison. -Nic

the mother had a rather decent position with the detroit fire department, a position, i believe, which gave her more access to fire sites that others within the detroit fire department. having failed polygraph tests and being unable to verify her story in any way, i believe she made her baby disappear into a fire scene. her payback will kill her.

Hi Saar, Just for clarification.... You are speaking of the Grandmother, correct? Not D'Wan's mother. I do want to point out that from everything I could find the Grandmother was very cooperative in the investigation. I saw the total opposite from D'Wan's mother. Personally I think there was some kind of accidental death as the result of an abusive Mother or mom's boyfriend that was covered up. I'm guessing something happened late the night before or earlier that day. The boyfriend disposed of the boy about the same time mom went to the mall. The mall story explains why they all of a sudden don't have the boy anymore. The mom and that boyfriend didn't end up staying together and she went on to have other children and moved out of state.
