At the mention of the Captain's friend who has "feelings": I agree that it makes sense for the killer to have returned for the search party that day. Has anyone looked into the gentlemen that joined the search party from another city stating that he had a teenage daughter as well?

This case hits close. I have a 13 year old daughter, and when I first read about this, freaked me right out. These poor girls, and their families.

im sorry to say this but these kids should never have been allowed to go hiking in this area alone. they are too young and there are too many predators in this day and age. maybe this whole thing could have been avoided. those poor poor girls :(:(:(

Great episode. I hope it gets solved. For some reason I kept thinking about the EarOns case in that someone has to know who this guy is. I've always thought if police had released some of the information early enough someone in EarOns life would have recognized characteristics about him and think the man in the woods has to be familiar to someone in his life as well. I think the audio clip is unfortunately too short for whoever knows him to recognize the voice. I don't know what else may be on the tape that could be considered in poor taste to recognize so maybe that's why they won't release it. Unfortunately, it could also be what would be required for someone to recognize the voice. I want to throw in a request if I may. I hope you guys will do an episode on the Sister Cathy murder case. Hopefully you have time to watch Netflix's "The Keepers" docu-series. There is SO much to talk about on that one. I believe you mentioned you were raised Catholic as well, so you have some experience in the Church. I can't recall if you went to parochial school or not. I was raised Catholic and went to parochial school all the way through. About ten years or so after I graduated, I found out that the principal of my high school, a priest, was defrocked and scandalized by the allegation by one of my classmates that he had been molested by this man. I knew the guy and remember him as a quiet and really nice young man. I believe him. I would never in a million years have suspected the priest could have done something like that. Oddly enough, the priest's last name was "Dickman". Stranger than fiction.

Lisa, that's what i was thinking too. as for the picture of the guy, if he was traveling he might not be used to the weather in that area. what i mean is, i'm from florida, and on days when we were in nyc and people were not wearing coats, i found i usually had one on. so maybe the warm weather they were having was not as warm as he is used to. does that make sense? also, it looks to me like he is wearing one of the hunting caps that has ear flaps. are there any pictures from the search that we might be able to find, maybe this man might appear in a picture?

Just listening to part 2, as far as an out of towner knowing there was a half day of school it could've been as easy as he drove past the school and the school sign announced it was a half day 2/13. Alot of schools have digital or letter signs out front now a days to remind parents driving past of events or days off/half days. Just a thought.

Just a thought regarding the video / audio from one of the girls phone - does it make sense that it was recovered from the cloud. I don't know what the cell tower coverage is in Delphi, IN but I have found that cloud uploads of audio and video can take a LONG time even when using wifi. If the killer took the phone and destroyed it, would 6 or 40 minutes of audio had time to successfully download? That amount of media would be an enormous file.

Is the hike something that the girls did regularly? If so, could they have been watched. To me, it seems like a "traveler" would be extremely lucky not just to happen upon the girls, but to commit the murders and then to reinsert the girls back into the search area. I think it is someone local that knew the area, although the local could be traveling now. Next, the barn, was the blood found there or at the scene were the bodies were found? There would obviously have to be large quantities. Adding to that moving two bodies seems like it would be hard, if the girls necks were cut that severely moving the bodies would be even more difficult. I'm baffled that a man could abduct, control, murder, sexually assault and move these two girls in a short span of time with this much spot light on the case and not be caught... yet. Nic - Captain, you two do good work.

This is one of those stories that really hits you in the heart. Such devastating facts about how these innocent girls died at the hands of a predator. I haven't been able to get the vision of Abby on the tracks - being her last picture and all, out of my head. Nick and captain - u did a great job of covering the story.

I live the next small town over, and I'm still saddened that they haven't caught this man, but I also know that all hands are on deck with this case. I'm grateful that Libby had the forethought to use her phone. I pray that they solve this soon.

Any way to cross-reference sex offenders in the area with a list of men with deer hunting licenses? Obviously a long shot and something law enforcement has hopefully looked at, but you never know... I tried looking up licenses on the DNR site but you need a birth date, while I can only find ages for those on this list, and lists of those in nearby counties: http://www.homefacts.com/offenders/Indiana/Carroll-County.html

I don't know if they do this, but they should make people write down their names on a list for search party. It may defer someone from joining though, but if the killer decides to join it they would have names and possible suspects. Like proof of who they are by drivers license or something.

What about someone at the children's school or associated with school district? Would have known abt 1/2 day holiday -- could have had eye on either or both girls. Or just that teens hang out in that area. Sure that Law Enforcement has already thought of that, but just asking... thanks, gentlemen... great podcast

This is very sad. I believe there are enough shadows to make a sketch of this person. I have a feeling it is a veteran. I work at the VA and he just has more of a look of a veteran than a hunter.... I hope to GOD not, but that is my feeling....

Lisa i agree with you, it seemed to convenient that he had to mention he had a daughter as well which kind of puts him in the guilty category of suspects. any normal person who wants to help in a search does not portray the reasons why they're helping they just help no questions asked. i do believe he should be brought in for questioning though.

Sarah, The spot the Captain was talking about is..... Look at the entrance to the bridge behind Abby. On the left side of that entrance you will see two thin shadows or dark objects. We have learned those are short posts, similar to parking posts. Behind those thin dark spots is the vehicle that the Captain sees. I hope this helps, Nic

Devin, There may be a way. Hopefully someone will see you question and could help with this. You should submit that question on webslueths as there are very savvy people on there that have a way of finding things. As for the sex offender list.... I have seen you tubers and blog commenters that have said two different men match the "composite sketch" however we should be clear Law Enforcement has stated that composite was not issued by LE it's an amateur drawing and they have warned us it may not be accurate. Thanks, Nic

Lindsey, Collecting information from search party members is usually a common practice and may have happened here. My only concern would be when they were searching they didn't suspect foul play so this may not have happened. It is however quite common that a killer will volunteer for the search. I actually suspect he was occupied during the evening and night searches. He probably would not have participated in the morning searches either. As I suspect he was either fleeing the area or tending to wounds and sleeping during this time. Thanks, Nic

This case infuriates me. The police have audio and/or video of this man and they only release two photos and one second clip of audio???? I understand that they may want to keep it private but in keeping it private they are not giving the public enough information to catch this monster that murdered two little girls. WHY ON EARTH would they want to not give the public as much information to go off of as possible??????? The police releasing more video/photos/audio can only lead to one thing, the capture of the subhuman that did this. Why they are not releasing more is simply allowing this monster to walk free. I also find it interesting that immediately after the murders the police were stating that parents should monitor their children closely and then all of the sudden changed their tune and said that the public should not be afraid. THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID?!??! There is a man walking around that killed two little girls…..and people SHOULDN’T be afraid???!?!??!?

I loved that you guys did a current case! I've been reading up on Websleuths to follow up and see if there's any more info, and they mentioned you guys, nice! However, there was more than one post about how a few facts you reported on were incorrect (and I totally understand as it's still an evolving case). But two things to note: it apparently was not a half day, but the girls had a full day off of school that day - as reported by a family member. Also, you reported that the girls were supposed to be picked up at 5:30, when in actuality they were supposed to meet to be picked up at 3:15 and the authorities were subsequently notified at 5:30 (making the timeline EVEN SMALLER of a window). One more thing in relation to the timeline, the SnapChat photo was posted at 2:07, and the Bridge Guy still was taken at 2:30. It seems like such an incredibly tiny window of time and I'm baffled! Just wanted to clarify those things, as noted on WS. But great reporting, love you guys!

So how did the suspect know they were there? Did they announce they were hiking that day? Did the mother tell someone that she was dropping the girls off to hike? Does the suspect have a fake account linked to their social media? Was it just a crime of opportunity? There has to be a direct or social media link to the girls! He was ready to fill his need. -Rochel

I think the guy pictured is clean shaven with light brown hair, if not he's wearing one of those golf hats where the visor is attached to the bill, the ear muffs that people see I think is a shadow of the coat . Also it's not a gun nor a knife that's hanging , it looks more like a long shirt hanging. From my experience working around delivery trucks, I know the drivers will sometimes walk the parking lot that are going to be at my shop for awhile. Didn't you say there was a shop close by? Just my input. You guys do good work thanks!

Hi Ro, I think the guy was watching the area and waiting for a female jogger/hiker and he saw the two girls get dropped off or he saw them alone. I think the police know the property owner did it. But since the girls were found on his property, maybe dna evidence is not as strong as they wish (of course my dna is on that tree, I live here, duh), or even maybe they screwed up the crime scene, or even the DA wants all her/his ducks in line before she creates the best case possible. At any rate, they put him in jail for a couple years...probably waiting for some kind of confession, too. LIKURJIB!!! Also, in the photo, I see a gun in the blue outer jacket, right pocket. And a bottle of liquor in the brown under jacket/hoodie, right pocket again (my guess is this was not the first bottle of his day/previous night. And this hoodie under a jacket may seem common, but really, who wears a hoodie under a jacket combo that often? Just too many plain in your jib kind of coincidences....best regards, daria

This is morbid, but I don't think you could tell by the scarfs they were wearing. If the pathologist considered strangulation, they would cut the neck to see if the hyoid bone was damaged or broken and so there would be stitches up through the neck and a scarf would hide that as well.

As someone who grew up only 25 miles from Delphi and having been there numerous times, its extremely surprising that this happened in that quaint community. This is one of those idealized rural American towns where nothing bad happens. Its truly an absolute tragedy for the whole community. I do not blame the parents for letting them walk the trails. Its one of those places where you don't ever have to worry about bad things happening. I too believe this is a serial killer who has been at large and gone unnoticed. I heard there was a very similar death of a young girl in Florida recently (if I am not mistaken).

I'm from Delphi, born and raised. Those trails always have been used by younger kids that take bike rides and we're always thought the trails were safer to get around then the main hwy that were always busy. It get more worrisome the longer time goes on. I know the law enforcement is going above and beyond literally knocking on every door and asking for the where about a of the citizens. I just don't like that people are quick to judge these good families.

Hi- I know some people think they were taken to a secondary location and 'moved back' to where the bodies were found. On your episodes it sounds like you think they were killed at the secondary location the bodies were taken back to the creek. I suspect that if he did take them elsewhere, he kept them alive, and walked them back to the creek and killed them there. Why take the risk of moving two bodies to such a difficult and remote location? It makes much more sense that the crime happened there in the woods, or if they did go somewhere else, they were brought back to the woods alive before they were killed. Especially if he did have a gun, it would make it easier for him to control them.

Just some information on Indiana. I am a convicted felon in the state. My record has two misdemeanor dui convictions that were combined to make me a felon. Indiana has the strictest dui laws in the country. The man getting 4 years for a ptr isn't unheard of. Also, the collects dna from all felons mandatory.... So if there is DNA evidence the killer has no felonies in Indiana.

Three very widely reported murders have recently been solved. Tara Grinstead, Jacob Wetterling, and Jessica Dishon. In each, innocent people were heavily investigated and had their lives totally changed due to public reporting of their possible involvement. In all three cases someone else was later linked to the case and will Likely be found guilty. All the perpetrators were people who lived in the community and were well-known in their community and by local law enforcement. I certainly hope that local law enforcement looks seriously at those who knew the girls, and/or lived in the area and may have had some prior police contact. Cases often are solved years later and the perpetrator has been previously linked to the investigation or it is someone who knew the victim but law enforcement did not make the connection until years later. Sure hope this case is solved quickly. Thanks for your podcast which I enjoy very much.

Hello I work in the funeral industry. We normally recommend for families to bring something high necked and long sleeve to cover any bruising or specifically the incision made from embalming which is often located need the collarbone area. This is such a sad case. It almost seems as if the victim practically gave the public a full description of her own attacker and the police still can't tell track him. Makes you wonder

We have heard armchair sleuths have been finding pictures of guys that look like the sketch and posting side by side images on FB. While the ones I have seen are "good matches" ISP is urging all to stop this. Stating its not helpful. So I won't comment on any specific "matches" that I have seen. More and more my gut tells me the bridge guy might be from out of town or from out of the state. If I'm right about things I said on the show this means he would have had to have stayed in the area for a couple of days before the murders. I do think the composite is a good one and a step in the right direction. Everyone please remember they are saying pay little to no attention to the hat in the composition. They are not very confident about the hat but they are confident about the facial features and the hair color - reddish brown. I have to wish ISP good luck and Godspeed this has gone on for far too long! Nic

Hi Bryan, I don't love accusing people on this forum however Jimmy Duvall has a previous horrible crime against a child so in my mind he does not deserve the same freedoms and respect as the rest of us. So fair game! So if he is still working/living where they have him listed at on his registry he's about 45 minutes drive away. That's just enough to feel comfortable and maybe you go unnoticed. Also they have a vague listing of scars on each arm and each leg, identifiers. The bridge guy was overdressed, could this be why? Personally though I don't think there is a resemblance but I've only seen two pics of him and they are old. And disclaimer everyone is innocent until proven guilty. If you feel strong about this Bryan you should call in the tip and let them handle this. Cheers, Nic

So I just came across your podcast and listened to this episode. I live not far away in Indiana and remember this one happening recently. Being so close my Facebook was flooded with the pictures and people trying to dissect them. But the one of the man walking on the bridge, you guys' were questioning where it came from. I believe it was the police department that put it on fb within a couple days after the girls were found. And the story then was that it was from a trail cam. I don't know why that was changed or redacted for some reason? But apparently it was, I believe, if you guys can't find any reports on that anymore

I'm wondering why this bridge is open in the first place. It appears that it would be easy for a child have an accident and fall between the planks or trip and stumble over the edge as there appears to be no guarding. I would think the city/county/state would view this as an "attractive nuisance" thus opening themselves up for lawsuits. That being said, I feel terrible for the families and the people of Delphi.

It still boggles my mind as to why this bastard has not been apprehended and facing trial. Someone knows this evil man & someone knows he did this. I feel it in my gut. If that person reads this... the only way you will ever feel better is if you turn him in. Keep in mind anytime this monster sees a young teenage girl, he's thinking about raping and murdering her. Family means nothing to this demon. No one means anything to him. - disappointed- Nic

The outfit of the guy in the picture resembles a hunting gear if youd go out for a week or so of camping while looking for a game... I found your podcast and listened after they arrested Daniel Nations in Colorado. I live near Delphi and have family in that county. It hurts my heart to read "those girls should never have been allowed to hike alone..." and other blaming of the parents. Things like this just don't happen here. No one would have batted an eye at two teens being allowed to hike alone. Kids spend time outdoors all the time around here, and they almost never get killed. It's just not a dangerous place to live, in spite of this case. Most crimes happen between people who know each other, not random stranger violence. I think the rumor that Abby was pregnant is ridiculous Puritanical BS that ultimately blames the victim (slut shaming) which only serves to make the rumor spreader feel safe. If you aren't 13 and pregnant, you're safe, after all. That's easier for our egos to swallow than completely random violence. Stories of girls getting killed on dates and because they were pregnant are as old as the hills, and are rarely true. Snopes.com has dozens of examples. A lot of people have been more interested in martial arts and self-defense in this area since this event, and our schools have beefed up their requirements for volunteers to have stricter background checks. We enrolled our children in karate because of this case, and bought them cell phones. I just hope that Nations is the bridge guy, for the sake of the family and the community. Even for those of us who didn't know the girls personally, this has been really hard. Oh, and the packing company you mentioned is Indiana Packers, they process hogs into pork, and it's a horrible job that a LOT of people who are otherwise unemployable, whether due to criminal backgrounds or poor references from prior employers, end up doing. They do get good employee discounts on meat, though, so they have that going for them.

Some people have imaginations that border on the delusional. This is rural Indiana we are talking about here. The guy in the video is a local. If he is stalking that area, he must know it as a place to potentially find victims there. He is either walking from where he lives or parked his car or truck nearby. I doubt he knew that there would be two young girls there at that time, so this was more of a crime of opportunity. His physical appearance and voice obviously reveal an older person, most likely in his 50s. He is not trying to hide his identity with a mask or anything, because it is a desolate area. The way he dressed is the way he always dressed. He was there because he lived in the area.

Of course I could be wrong. We have unsolved cases over here. In my opinion I think this is the person responsible and I don't know if it is a local man or not. I only hope is that this person is brought to justice. Someone may have a tip which could finally lead to the arrest of the person responsible.

One question I have is on the description of the girls fingernails after they were found. If they were damaged/ in bad condition as if she put up a fight then it also could be from her being restrained in a building/room etc and her attempts to break out (possibly while the other girl was being assaulted). Did Law Enforcement look for signs as such?

I have read a lot of speculation about the guy in the picture but I haven't really seen anything that explains why he is more than a person who may have information. But it seems like he has been focused in on rather heavily as THE prime suspect and as such I am wondering if I am missing something or if the authorities are just holding back the precise implicating information. From the rather novice sleuth perspective it seems like an unjustified narrowing of perspective. It may be he was passing by and didn't see anything but given the public pressure he thinks that answer isn't good enough or suspicious, so it's better to keep his mouth shut. Also, I haven't seen if they have checked the kids in the school. If the killer was known to the girls it may have been a fellow student who hasn't had the chance to rack up a criminal record or profile, plus they may have known the area and had the opportunity with the half day as well. Its just a theory I haven't seen ruled out. Either way, keep up the good work, and I hope this is resolved soon.

If BG is a local what set him off that day? Why did he decide to kill kids from the area he frequented on that day? Rumours are that he had been seen around the bench on the Monon trail that the girls were hiking asking for money and he was described as being 'dirty' by a family member of one of the girls who passed him on the bench .BG asked for money as they passed and a confrontation occurred because the family member said 'I'm broke' and BG followed behind him. This family member had a friend with him. Another rumour is that he was also spotted by a searcher somewhere along the trail on the 14th. Homeless hitchhiker dropped off near the bridge that goes over the hwy and stuck around freezing his butt off, hungry , broke and angry at the world is my guess. He is violent and has hurt people in the past.

No one talks anymore avout Jimmy Duvall. He looks like the composite sketch. He missed work feb 12 13 14 15, they took dna from him, then he disappeared. Why did we never hear about him again?

I have done a little bit of research on how Google Earth or satellite imagery is being used more often to help solve crimes. According to Google Earth, their imagery is typically updated around the 6th and 20th of each month. I’m curious if the police have considered this angle, especially since the bridge and surrounding areas are basically out in the open. At the very least, it could show who was walking on the bridge or in surrounding areas in the days leading up to the murder. There’s probably a small chance that any obvious clues can be obtained from satellite imagery, but it may provide some insight into the case.

looking at the photo of the girl on the bridge and the black spots in background... the two line up as bases of the trees ---the more intriguing one, more mysterious dark image, to me, is to the right, about halfway back---a dark spot that sort of lines up with what appears to be a path onto the bride walkway.. this couldve been an image of bridge man, maybe where the girls first spotted him?

I was like all other parents from here at first thinking it would have been ok to let teens walk the trail. My husband and i recently walked it up to the fence blocking the rest of the trail to that bridge, at this hike I have changed my mind. This is so secluded, so many ways to get in, so many places for someone to hide. Also, I question the theory of it being someone from ..out of state. Just my opinion. I don't understand why the cops don't release something else to help.

Just finished listening to these two episodes. It was scary enough reading reports about these murders when they first happened, but hearing Nic and the Captain tell the story is even more terrifying! Here’s the question that I can’t get out of my head and haven’t been able to find info about online, “was this hiking area a place known for girls to hang out?” If someone was waiting for an opportunity to go after some children, why stake out that particular area? These two girls seem like they were artistic and so I could see them wanting to go to the bridge because it creates a cool background for photos. But seems really lucky for someone with a sinister agenda to come across a victim there. Have you come across any reports from locals saying that Delphi kids were commonly hanging out in the woods there?

Kaylene, I have not seen anything saying that girls particularly hiked there. The other tricky thing is the way it is described it’s a well traveled area with a decent amount of foot traffic. I think this child killer waited and went to this location more than once watching and waiting for an opportunity. He probably went to other locations as well attempting to do the same thing. Sad and scary! Nic

I think Daniel Nations is a total creepozoid, but the man in the video is clearly older- maybe late 50s or 60s. He is also walking with a heavy limp. This case just fascinates me, I hope they find him soon.

I feel like this guy may have been homeless. One, he wore so many layers of clothing because that’s what homeless do so they’re not carrying it. That instead of carefully planning out where his car is, he didn’t own one. Maybe he didn’t have a cell phone. I think that maybe he saw the girls and sorta followed them or stalked them. Was very vigilant in his surroundings and made sure in those moments that he had a way to entrap them. Knowing they already made it across the bridge and their only way back was to go in his direction. Maybe it was the girls standing back waiting for him to pass with himself already knowing that by the time he reaches them that he would then over power them and force them in that direction.
