Nic & The Captain discuss the unsolved murder of 26 year old Joey Labute Jr. This case hits close to home and close to the heart. Joey was last seen having drinks with friends at a popular downtown bar in Columbus Ohio. His body was found in the Scioto River, March 29th, 2016. This case is extremely sad and hauntingly familiar. Almost 10 years prior to the day that Joey's body was found, a young professional man same age as Joey had disappeared from a busy downtown bar in the same neighborhood. As Columbus mourns the loss of Joey the city is reminded of the disappearance of Brian Shaffer.

I am Joey's aunt. I just wanted to say that despite a few inconsistencies with the names of the people receiving text messages I was very touched by the sensitive way this information was presented. It's been a nightmare and continues to be until we have answers as to why anyone would take our precious Joey from us. Not only have his friends and family lost something so special, we will never know what greatness he would have brought to this world.

Wendy Thank you so much for reaching out to us. We try are best to get the facts and details right but there is so much out there so sorry for that. We didn't know Joey but had friends that did and our thoughts are with everyone. Hopefully this helps keep some light on Joeys case and we get answers soon. Much love to you. Captain

This is Joey's sister....our general speculation is that he was roofied. That week and the week before there had been several cases of people who were roofied. I think that same person that roofied those other people roofied him also and because Joey has never used drugs and the person overdosed him accidentally and the paniced and threw him in the water... I sense there were two men behind it. One was the more active person with the other one being like the driver. I sense he was targeted by this couple and then was smothered. I sense his body was kept inside a vehicle for several days before being placed in the water. I did make brief contact with Joey's spirit and he said he was kept someplace cold and then mentioned the name "Justin" and a "T" name that wasn't clear, something like "Terry". I haven't listened to the podcast yet and I don't know anything about the case, first hearing about it by reading the description above. So I will listen to the podcast and if I pick up on anything else that I feel is vital, or if I make contact with Joey's spirit again then I will post it here. I can tell you that I feel good that this case can be solved. My biggest concern is that I fear the police getting bombarded by false leads that will waste time and sap money and manpower. I pray that I don't add to that.

@ True Crime Garage Thank you. I finished the episode and I thought you guys did a good job. I hope you continue to revisit this case so people don't forget about him. I made contact with Joey again and he is ashamed of some out of character behavior from him that is coming to light. He is concerned what his family might think but I told him that his family loves him and just wants answers as to what happened. Please keep in mind that as a medium all I do is pass on the information. Most of it is meaningless to me and so I will refrain from trying to interpret it. It is up to the people who knew him or who are involved in the case to make sense of it, assuming it is even possible to do so. He says he was scammed. He got into a vehicle and the situation wasn't what it was supposed to be. He didn't feel comfortable and was prevented from leaving. There was a scuffle. He says he began screaming and then someone put a hand over his mouth. This was followed by a cloth or an article of clothing and then pressure was applied to force him down. He said he couldn't breathe. He says he was taken to a place with an electrical-type buzzing sound, like fans or AC units running. He says he was cold. His body was kept in the car. He said the phrase "by Roberts" and "Hansel/Hansal/Hanzal?"(unsure of what he was saying), and then "2 days". He said his wrist hurt and he said that something metal was placed on his body. He said something was thrown away and that should have been recorded on video. He also mentioned the word "Tennent", or something similar, and was saying something about tires, some connection to tires. He also said the phrase, "Rocky Mountains". The way he said this makes me think it has some other meaning and is not a reference to Colorado, but I really don't know. I asked him to describe the car and he only responded with the word "unique". I don't know if this was his sense of humor but I sort of thought he meant that the car was kind of a junker and stood out. My intuition would be perhaps an older model car, possibly brown or tan, with rust or primer exposed. However, keep in mind that he did not say this and this is just what I would say from intuition. I also pick up on a dark colored car but for all I know that could be Joey's. The last thing he said was the phrase, "walking distance from school". I will back off from this and give it a rest. My life is really busy at the moment and when things calm down I might return to this case and do another session to see if I can contact him again and get any new information. However, please continue to cover this case. It's important to keep this case fresh in people's minds until it is solved. Keep up the good work, guys. I definitely will continue to listen. Pretty fascinating shows.

I am Joey's Aunt, the "Columbus Mom". Thank you for a very respectful presentation, except for a few skewed facts, overall well done. We hold the CPD in highest regard & are in agreement that they are holding info close to the vest, that will lead to arrests of the person or persons responsible. Our Joey was a bright, handsome, loving soul who had a promising future., it is beyond our comprehension that his precious life was taken. We may have broken hearts, but we are a united family who can't be broke, we won't rest until this is solved & justice served. Our thanks to both of you for featuring Joeys story!

First time I listened to the podcast was after doing a search on Brian Shaffer because of how much it reminded me of Joey's case. You two did a great job on both stories. I must say I'm very intrigued with Intuitives comments and readings and would love to hear if there is more contact. I am praying for his family to find peace and Joey to receive justice. RIP

RE: The intuition posts Okay, this is kinda crazy, probably, but I found Interstate Cold Storage on Old Roberts Road and just off Roberts Rd. in an area north of where Joey's body was found...There are a lot of "Roberts this" and "Roberts that" in that area, which looks to be mostly industrial. NOTABLY: Across a small field from Interstate Cold Storage, at 2365 Setterlin Drive, there is a company called Montgranite (Rocky Mountain?) and its logo is two sharp mountain peaks, visible on the outside of the building. Between the two is "Roberts Milliken Ditch." https://goo.gl/maps/BGFb5cmSUjQ2 Check out the street view. It's clear there is a lot of distribution, trucking, and storage in that area. I'm not one to believe in intuition, really, but that's pretty spooky, don't you think?

Joey says his killer was in love with him, obsessed. He is from the area and he frequented the same locations. Joey says that he met him before and that he was approached by him in a bathroom. I sense it was probably the same bathroom of the place he disappeared from but not on the same night. Joey was rude to him or was too blunt with him and the guy was devastated and was very hurt. It was obvious that Joey was completely out of his league. Joey was like a 10 and this guy is more like a 2, older, burly or fat, probably balding. He is stronger than Joey. I sense he recently lost his job which may have sent him over the edge. He became fixated on Joey and he became the center and meaning of his life. There is also a jealousy component, like Joey is perfect and has lived a perfect life and he has been denied his share. Joey is saying the names "Debbie", "Miller", "Steve" and "Gibson". He says Debbie and/or possibly whoever Gibson is know who the killer is. Joey is saying something about a castle, like the killer lives in a castle. Joey says he's seen him in a parking lot staring at him. He has pictures of Joey and I think that if he is caught they will be found. I think he knows he is supposed to get rid of them but he can't let himself do it and so he keeps them. Joey is also saying something about fake pictures as well. Joey says he is reading everything about Joey online. He scours every article or anything that mentions him. He reads this website and he is scared of me. Joey says he is suicidal and will kill himself if he fears he will be caught. The killer is very pathetic. Instead of just moving on there was a scheme to try to trick Joey, like the killer felt that if he could just get Joey alone that he would be his. I don't sense he set out to actually harm Joey because he wanted to be with him but things went sour fast and he panicked and did what he did. There is a second man involved and he is very unlike the killer. I think he may have drove the vehicle the body was in at the request of the killer. He likely did not know that Joey's body was in the vehicle. I sense he is skinny and may be slow or have some mental defect and is very passive. He may be the boyfriend of the killer or just a very weak-willed person who is bossed around by the killer. Joey is talking something about a waitress, like it's important to talk to her. Joey says that other guys have had creepy experiences with his killer in the past. There are other complaints. Joey says there is something to do with angels and the killer, like some reference or something that has meaning.

@intuitive I'm overall a skeptic, but your comments were interesting to me. Police released surveillance footage last month of Joey at Union, and I wondered if there was a reason why they released the shots that they did. In both pictures, Joey was near a bald headed man, once by the bathroom. I thought it was curious that this mystery man was in both shots, and wondered if they released those pictures on purpose, like perhaps he was a person of interest.

@ Ashley Unfortunately, I think I was a bit too optimistic with regard to this case being solved. I don't think the police have much to work on and I might be the only person of interest if I did hit on key details. That's just how it goes with psychics. If you are accurate then you are considered a suspect until you are ruled out. The undetermined ruling does allow for an eventual change to homicide, which is good. I know money is tight but if the family can afford it they may consider an independent autopsy, that is if Joey has not been cremated or the state of decay is not too advanced. I'm wondering if small details may have been overlooked, details like wounds to the inner lips/mouth that may have been produced by the teeth with the pressure of being smothered. Joey also said his wrist hurt so I was wondering if they might find something there as well. Very sad, tragic case. A gorgeous young man with a great future had his life taken from him and I fear that there may never be earthly justice for him.

I find Intuitive posts interesting. I also found the information from AndieGH almost to real.....So much information. Surely the Columbus Police can use some of this to find out what happend to Joey. His family deserves answers. Please anyone out there with any information...no matter how small....please HELP. Intuitive...please continue to help this family with your contacts with Joey and the information you have possibly gained. I understand the police have to leave no stone unturned, but don't let that stop you from reaching out to this family and keeping in contact with Joey. I will admit...prior to reading your post...as soon as I saw the bald guy close to Joey in the video I got a strage feeling about him. I think the police should put that picture out there and ask if anyone can identify this person to contact them.

Just listened to this episode for the first time this morning, very well done! Probably a waste of time to mention, but just an FYI- You mentioned that C Rubye Falsz's comment ("I guess he got his drink of water.") had been removed from The Columbus Dispatch site, but I actually stumbled upon it last week when I first looked into this case: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2016/03/31/Police-identify-body-in-river.html Thought it was odd myself, but very cool that you mentioned it in the episode! Thanks for a great episode, and my condolences to the family.

@ Ashley I just found those pictures you mentioned. In one of them Joey and the bald guy have their arms placed around each other. I get how this may make people question if the bald guy was involved but in reality it is very common for gay guys to touch or be touched, let alone kiss and make out with multiple men over the course of a night at a gay bar, and especially if they are attractive. That doesn't mean that Joey hooked up with him or even was actually interested in him. Guys, and gay guys are no exception, are just very hands-on and if you go to gay bars you will see this a lot. Honestly, I don't understand why the police didn't release these pictures sooner. @ Mom2bnb Please keep in mind that psychics don't solve crimes. Instead, we are just a tool to be utilized, if the police are willing. Although some people in law enforcement are open-minded, most hold to the opinion that psychics are useless, and worse, if they happen to get info right then they must be the perp. There have been horror stories of psychics being arrested and charged with crimes they didn't commit. Reference Etta Smith who was arrested and charged with the rape and murder of a woman because she had a vision of exactly where the missing woman's body was located and then went out and found the body. She spent days in jail before the real killer confessed to the crime. I recently found the websleuth threads on Joey's case. There are two threads now. I am very shocked and saddened about information I've read from there. I so very much wish I would have stumbled upon this case sooner as would have immediately recommended that the family disobey the wishes of the police and hire a private investigator ASAP., the quicker the better. I would and still do recommend a second autopsy if it is at all possible at this point. I believe the family was very much naive and placed too much trust in law enforcement. I'm not saying law enforcement is bad or anything, it's just that these types of cases tend not to end well and how one reacts at the very start of the case can determine if the case is ever solved or not. I know this is very painful for the family to hear, but at this time I have very little hope of this case being solved. In the latest news story law enforcement is begging the person(s) who was with Joey right before he died to come forward. I felt this was a very desperate move and one which revealed the hand, or lack thereof, of the police. At this point I fear the police are possibly going to go the route of saying that Joey's death was accidental, possibly from alcohol poisoning, and that the person(s) he was with freaked out and dumped is body in the river. I do not believe this for a split second. I believe Joey was smothered to death as that is what he told me and he told me this before the autopsy results were released. I never said he was drugged, as so many people believed. I never said he was strangled as some people believed. I never said he was mugged as some peopled believed. I wrote he was smothered because that's what he said to me. Dumping a body in a river is done to destroy evidence of a crime. If this was an accidental death then Joey's body would have been dumped somewhere with the intention of it being found. Whoever placed Joey's body in the water did not want him to be found. That's the difference that screams to me that this is a homicide. I have not attempted to make contact with Joey's spirit again. I've been too busy with my life. I can say that I had a nightmare that I think is connected to this incident. Just at the point of falling asleep I dreamed that arms shoved what looked like a white work shirt over my face. I immediately bolted upright in bed and was heaving for air. I feel this was what Joey experienced. The events of Joey's death and the Orlando Pulse shooting just show how even today in 2016 that gay people are vulnerable. This is Pride week. Next weekend most major cities will have Pride festivals. I know most of the attention will be placed on the victims of the Orlando shooting but hopefully word will spread about Joey's case. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Joey's surviving family members and friends.

I found this case to be very tragic but also very fascinating. Firstly, I think we have to go with everyone's gut and suspect foul play. The fact a medical expert determined that the body was placed in the water after death is a large point. However, I would like to see that conclusion confirmed by another examiner. Next, I think the host was correct in suggesting that the Arnold Classic played a role in this. Believe it or not there is a dark underworld of drug abuse and homosexuality behavior within body building (google gay for pay bodybuilding), not to mention GHB use. This "crowd" of men attracts its fair share of male obsessed fans. Also, it might be worth considering a shrewd killer might use the confusion of the Arnold Classic, the transfer of resources to that event, along with the influx of out-of-towners, as cover to commit a crime like this. I suspect the following happened, Joey walked away from his group to get a drink or use the restroom. While away he was approached by another person. This person could have been the actual killer, or someone the killer was using to attract their victim, perhaps a bodybuilder (surveillance footage might help). During this interaction Joey was either drugged (probable), or made plans to see the guy later (doubtful). During all of this, Joey's group could not find him in the crowded bar and left. The cryptic text to the aunt could have been his last attempt to contact someone for help, but either had the phone abruptly taken from him, or simply didn't have the motor skills to complete the text. Finally, there was one part of the whole podcast that did not sit well with me, and that was the reply Joey gave to his date. I believe his date texted him, "nice seeing you cutie" and Joey oddly replied, "Byeeeee." Unless this was common to him, I just don't see someone well polished, replying to that statement with, Byeeee....I think, "Thanks, great seeing you" or something close to that would be more appropriate. The "byeeee" text seemed very odd to me. Final Questions: How long does GHB stay in the body, and would the examiners expect to see it on a toxicology result. 2. How certain are we he parked 20 mins away and walked to the bar, did he communicate to anyone where he parked? If so, that makes the call where he claimed to be "driving" seem that much more out of place. Almost as though someone forced him to quickly answer the phone and say that.

My thought on the message board post about the drink of water is that it could easily be a troll, but it may very well be knowledge and reference to him having been drugged and needing that drink of water. quite possibly something only factually known by a person or persons involved.

Was going to write a longer post, but SB covered a lot of the issues was planning to broach, and quite well. The roofie explanation answers a lot of questions, namely why Joey would simply disappear from the bar without letting his cousin know, at least in a general "hey, I bumped into a fiend, stepping out for a few to chat" (that being if it was a hookup scenario, etc). And while you cannot believe much that you read online, there is no shortage of people claiming to have been "roofied" at the Union and another gay bar located just across the street (Axis). Scary stuff. And, yes, the "Byeeeeeee" text has never set well with me either. From the way he has been described I too would expect a more refined, polite response. It occurred to me that "Byeeeee" seems dismissive in tone, suggesting perhaps the date he had been on earlier that night was not so great, maybe this "Matt" guy was turning out not to be a keeper? I don't know what it means in the grand scheme of things, but that strange text has bothered me from very start.

If it weren't for the muscle event I'd say it sounds like a jealous date. Joey maybe dated a bit casually as one does. Some hanger on thinks he's more serious than he is. More of a domestic violence thing. Perhaps the muscle event with all the hot guys around was the catalyst. It happens.

I am not sure if anyone is monitoring these threads anymore, but I thought I would post this anyways. My name is Troy Griffin, and I am a practicing Medium and Psychic Detective who has worked on unsolved murders and missing person cases around the world. The reason for my post today is that I have seen a few pieces on Joey's case and have this in my cases to review in 2017. I have kept this case in my file and the reason for 2017, is that a psychic should be one of the last resources in a case like this. And when a case like this is new, you will get many psychics who have something to say. With this being said, if the family is interested in speaking with me about this case, that would be great as I have interest in looking into this case further. For more information on me, my website is: www.psychicmediumtroy.com and www.northamericanpsychicinvestigations. com My contact information is listed on the website. Hi everyone. Nik and the Captain I want to compliment on having one of the best true crime podcasts on the internet. I think you two do a great job of keeping the audience entertained while conveying the facts as accurate as possible. I also give you two credit you always get into potential theories and what your personal opinion is which is great. I think a lot of podcast fail at doing that and you feel cheated at the end. With that said I wanted to give my opinion on the Labute case. There is one question I was hoping you or the viewers could answer for me. I have never been to that part of Columbus. If Joey were to walk from the bar to his car would there be any part during that walk that he would be potentially alone for a few minutes. Is it a NYC type walk that even at that time the whole way there would be people and places or is there a part of it where he could encounter people alone for a few minutes.

That could alter my theory a bit but for now lets say it was a crowded walk. First thing I'd clarify is the text. I am reading a lot of comments online about the Byeee text. Whether that sounds like Joey or not there is no reason to think he was comprised at the time of that text correct? It was him who sent it and probably not under any duress correct? He hadn't even met his cousins at the bar yet. So that's irrelevant to the final outcome I think. At first I was on board with your comments about the police playing it close to the vest. Now that this amount of time has passed I'm not so sure. I don't think they have anyone who they have good evidence against. With that said unless I'm wrong there was no strange text on his phone during the time at the bar correct? Nobody sent a text saying meet us outside or come to a different bar. Is there a chance he met someone in the bar that he left with sure. I don't know him or his personality but to go from Hello from a random stranger to lets leave the bar together and not tell my cousins sounds like a stretch but when people drink or do drugs (not saying Joey did) and are out in a social setting they are more comfortable and stranger things have happened. The body building show could play into it. There are a lot of on the down low gays in that industry and there is a chance one might have thought I'm only here for a day or two they won't connect me to this it's a perfect opportunity for me to commit a crime. Could he had arranged meeting someone else at a specific time somewhere else and not have told his cousins again sure. He could have met up with friends and something went wrong. With no drugs in his system I'm ruling out partying OD and dump his body. His tox test show no drugs correct? Also GHB would not kill you most likely make you messed up and vulnerable yes but OD probably not. It's baffling like Shafer's case but there is an answer. Most of the time it's the most logical one but in this case it's hard to say what's the most logical theory. Usually people kill for Love, Revenge, Money. Sure there are many other reasons but those 3 cover a good amount of ground. Money would be robbery gone bad. Love I don't think anyone Joey was seeing would do it. Revenge potentially like the psychic said someone who was obsessed and feel rejected. I'm going to listen to the podcast once more and I will post my theory and people can let me know what they think. All I ask is Nik and Captain run a great show and it seems like a show where everyone and anyone from any place in the world is welcome to listen. So if you don't agree with anything I post on these cases feel free to challenge me or say I'm wrong or whatever but I ask swearing , personal attacks and anything along those lines refrain from saying it. Thanks.

Mike, Columbus is a difficult city. It can be hustle and bustle at any one time and ghost town at another. At the hour Joey was leaving, and in that area it should have been fairly well populated but as mentioned no one can say for certain. It was "Arnold Classic" weekend too so would have been busier than normal.

Placing him in the water was a definite cover up of something else. I'd be shocked if one of Joey's friends were involved. I have several friends that knew him from work and these guys had nothing but good things to say about Joey. The first thing each said to me was smart when describing him. This is all coming from smart pretty judge mental dudes. The anniversary of Joey's passing is coming up, hopefully we get some answers. He's got a great family and they deserve to know. -Nic

Just to add on to what Intuitive has said... " Joey is saying something about a castle, like the killer lives in a castle." -There is an apartment complex across the street from Union that is gray stone, covered in ivy, and shaped like a castle. "Joey says he's seen him in a parking lot staring at him." -The parking lot of that building is on the corner directly across from Union. It also has fire escape type stairs that start in the parking lot. I'm sure that if you stood on those stairs, you could see directly into the Union patio.

What was the name of the guy he went on a date with? Matt is what I’ve heard. I searched joeys friends on Facebook and there are quite a few Matt’s. But one stuck out as his last name is similar to the text Joey sent.

Just listened to this episode today and was struck by the comment on the online article. The name C. Ruby Falsz sounds like a reference to Ruby Falls & See Rock City; tourist sites on lookout mountain near Chattanooga, TN. I want to believe this is a meaningless troll but the reference seems so deliberate.
