I'm from East Texas near the Dallas area, but when I was 10 my dad would take us down to Galveston every year. One year when I was about 13, I looked out the window while we were stuck in traffic on I-45 during a hurricane evacuation and saw LE/authorities putting a dead body in a body bag. Crazy stuff. Definitely not the craziest thing I've seen unfortunately. There are two cases you guys should look up from nearby towns where I live. Look up the Caffey Family Murders (Emory,TX) and Nichole Payne & Austin Wages murders (Quitman,Tx). My husband was in the same class as Austin. It was originally thought to have been a murder/suicide. This case was actually on Dateline about a year or two ago. Keep up the good work!

Incredible job putting together this three part show. Super impressed with every part of your production values from the original music to the research. When do you guys sleep?

But how the hell was Knoppa released from prison after only serving 15 years and threatening to kill police?

Hi Heather, It does seem strange that they would let Knoppa out especially Texas. However remember just like we talked about in the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders back then Texas prisons were overcrowded and they eventually were even reducing sentences for violent offenders. That was changed in Texas law because of the broomstick killer. Nic

Just wanted to update everyone that the body of Jessica Cain was found in Southeast Houston, a few miles from where she was last seen, around February or April 2016. This was 19 years after her disappearance. They talked about her on part 3.

Thank you Ashlee. Yes William Reece led authorities to her body. I can't wait for him to be convicted of these murders. It's been far too long for everyone involved. -Nic

Just shared this with a friend of mine in League City, TX who apparently lives down the road from the killing fields. I thought this would be a great distraction from riding out the flooding they're experiencing due to Harvey right now. Nic do you know if the fields have since been built upon and turned into neighborhoods?

Hi Nikki, It's possible that they have developed the land - that was an issue with the 70-80's investigations the area along I-45 was being developed and the population was skyrocketing. I think I have seen some video footage of the area taken within the last 5 years and it was still fields. Despite the case I wish to visit Galveston some day. I love Texas and Galveston and Houston are basically the only places I'm yet to venture to.

I grew up in the Galveston Bay Area of Texas which is halfway between Galveston and Houston. I stayed with my grandparents in Galveston every weekend. They lived 4 apartments away from Maria Johnson's grandparents and I was friends with Maria Johnson. We used to swim in the pool, and the apartments were just behind Sunrise Surf Shop which was at 48th & Seawall Blvd. (beach). I was 11 and she was 14 when she disappeared. I was younger, so didn't roam around much, but it was pretty common in those days for kids her age to go off on their own and to hitchhike. When they found her body it was a terrible day. I still remember the horrifying feeling. Additionally, we lived in the same apartment complex as the Selph's in League City and my mother was a teacher and taught school with Michael Selph's mother Ola Mae. Mike was not the sharpest tool in the tool chest, but he was a nice guy. He lived with his mom and whenever my mom needed something from the store, she would sometimes ask Mike would take me there. I think he was 17-18 at the time and had a beat up car. He never laid a hand on me, was always kind to me and told jokes. I have always felt desperately sorry for his wasted life and will always feel like the police were under pressure to solve a case rather than find out who did it. His mother died heartbroken. Oh, and you mentioned Taylor Bayou. I borders El Lago...it's not 20 miles from it.

East Texas probably has more active rapists and murderers than any other area in the US. It is a pretty scary and sketchy place. I am from Central Texas, but you can ask anybody from any area in our state, the eastern part is pretty awful. Am betting you could do about five years straight on your show just staying in that area. No telling how many active predators are working it. .

The field is still there, Nic. I just went to visit the memorials a couple weeks ago. It's behind the Magnolia Creek Baptist Church.

You all did do a wonderful job. I more recently discovered your podcast and myself and my family just listened to this trilogy this evening. I really appreciate what you both do and I am sure the families of the victims do as well.

Great job on the research for this. A friend told me about your podcast a week ago and I have been listening every day since. I came across this one and it was very surreal to know our house is bordering these fields. I had no idea about this until I listened.
