Long Island Serial Killer UPDATE ////// 20

Long Island Serial Killer - update

In the final episode of the season Nic & the Captain chat about the first season of True Crime Garage and how much love and help they have received from listeners and the TCG Army. We get to hear bits about cases they intend to cover in season 2 and new information that came out in February 2016 regarding the unsolved Long Island Serial killer and Shannon Gilbert cases. Thanks for a fantastic season 1 & we hope to see you again soon with a HUGE season 2!!!!

Beer of the week - Florida Cracker by Cigar City Brewing - Tampa Florida

This refreshing white ale is brewed with unmelted wheat, orange peel and coriander and then fermented in French saison yeast. It's lighter, very tasty and complicated like all of Cigar city's brews. Delicious but don't call me cracker!
Garage grading - 3-1/2 bottle caps

Thank you Tyler, Timothy, Rebecca, Dana & Niki - cheers & much love!

Don't litter!

Great show guys! I wouldn't worry too much about peeps coming after ya'll though. Bob Ruff from Truth & Justice just called out the entire Smith County Sheriff's Office and they're Texans, Texans with guns that carry smaller guns and yet Bob's still breathing!

Great episode. Can't wait for the next season. Just my opinion that JB is the LISK. I'll have to disagree on Michael Pak's involvement, though it's certainly possible and worth exploring. Since I think JB killed Shannan and that the 2 girls who were killed after her were asked not to bring phones because of the incident, then that means the other 2 girls found with them were tied to him as well. I'm not sure about the others, but I'd say it's highly likely he killed them all, especially since Jessica Taylor's remains were found in Manorville and also on Gilgo. I believe men were found there too (Manorville). We have one man found in women's clothing. Isn't it funny that JB made that crack about thinking Shannan may have been a man? (maybe another trigger). I have always suspected that when JB had MP come into the house, he intended to kill him. This was thwarted when he realized Shannon was on the phone. MP's statement about her running is corroborated by Gus Coletti and Barbara Brennan. We know she ran from the house. The Canning neighbor's son said he saw her footprints in the sand. Why she ran from MP remains a mystery, and I can see how that would be suspicious. But to date there is nothing that connects him with all of the rest, and since these murders date back as far as 1996, I'm thinking Pak is too young. Wasn't he only in his mid 20s? Was he born in the US or an immigrant? I know he got into some trouble in an immigration scam so I surmised he is an immigrant himself, helping friends get into the country. This makes me think he may not have even been here during the earlier murders. That's something that is left to speculation as I don't have all the information on him. I have found a bi-racial element to all of the Gilgo 4 and Shannon, so that's why I wondered if there is a racial trigger going on, coupled with the known killer making racial slurs during his calls. I also think Hackett is a red herring. The killer is known to use burner phones, used a victim's phones for calls in Times Square and must be careful with computers as well, possibly using proxies. So why would he suddenly use his own phone and further actually identify himself to the victim's mother? That makes no sense whatsoever. I don't know why but he's known to be a strange guy, but I don't think he had the physical prowess to chase Shannan down and kill her. I have one other theory involving Brewer about the call that I emailed you guys about, but it's wild speculation so I won't go into it here. Here's another bizarre element to the story. The police refuse to release the 911 call. Why? She must have said something during the call that they want to hold back from the public and the killer. Commonly police hold something back that only the killer would know, or to hide what they actually know from the killer. Given she had just run from Brewer, I'd say it's quite possible she identified him as the killer, either by name or by description as her last client. If they are trying to placate Brewer because they do not have enough evidence on him to make an arrest, then maybe that's why they don't want this out, nor do they want it out that Shannan was murdered. I've never bought the ludicrous story that she ran out of her own jeans, throwing clothing and belongings willy nilly as she ran, then suddenly collapsed completely naked in 2 inches of water and drowned. Oh, and guess what...she was found face up as well. How did she turn herself back over after drowning? Since I think that story is so ridiculous, I have speculated it is just that, a story. They have to have the killer think the heat is off of him and hope he makes a mistake. Countless serial killers of this ilk were caught by the one who got away. Some of them went on to kill more as the police did not believe the victim or just had no evidence. Robert Hansen, Gary Ridgway, Kendall Francois, The Bike Path Killer in New York, Ted Bundy, etc. The list is long. Shannan almost got away. Hopefully the police have been trying to find JB's past escorts and interviewing them. Probably had they searched thoroughly the morning Shannan went missing they would have been able to arrest Brewer and the possible accomplice only known as the 'drifter'. It boggles the mind that she ran from MP, but she also ran from Gus Coletti. I feel that MP took off out of fear when Gus (who is now deceased) told him he called police. In any event, all they can do is watch JB carefully for a misstep which is probably why he hasn't killed again that we know of. The Bike Path rapist/killer was identified by a victim and interviewed by police and didn't strike again for years because it scared him, but he eventually gave into his deviant inclinations and thankfully was caught. Hopefully they can eventually make a connection without another murder, but unfortunately that's not often how it works out. This again is all just opinion and speculation. It is a fascinating whodunit.

Let me clarify my previous comment about the 911 call. Remember, if Shannan had said "I was at this guys house and he tried to kill me" it's very incriminating once they identified her and whose house she was at. But, they did not make the connection at first. It was months before they connected that call to the disturbance at Gilgo, and it would be even longer before they found any bodies, and much later before Shannan was found. So even if the accusation is hanging there, there is no evidence to be had. For the longest time, they did not know whether she was even dead. There has to be a good reason for police to withhold the 911 call. She said something they don't want out. There must be a strategic reason for that.

I was listening again and had another thought to add. I speculated that when JB asked MP to come into the house he intended to kill him. (The unidentified Asian male in women's clothing had been beaten to death on the head. Was he a transvestite invited there and it freaked out JB? Or could he have been a driver of one of the other unidentified victims? Could they have dressed him in the female victim's clothing to humiliate him? Just a couple of scenarios). At any rate, let's say Shannan had not been on the phone and JB had killed MP and Shannan, gotten rid of the car and their cell phones. Would anyone know what happened to either of them? They would have just disappeared and likely not be connected to JB, just like Maureen, Melissa, Megan and Amber. Unless Shannan had left some type of record or told someone else where they were going that night, they would have no clue what happened or where they were last seen. They may have even speculated that Shannan was done in my MP and then MP took off. Or that they went off together voluntarily for some unknown reason. Did anyone see the A&E special about the case? I can't find it now, but Pak was interviewed on camera in that. Something about him just doesn't strike me as the killer. But during his interview, he said something about how when JB had him come into the house, that Brewer reached out to grab her in some strange way. It seems he thought it was odd and seemed overly aggressive, but then they saw she was on the phone. Then the events were so chaotic that he seemed genuinely confused. I wish someone had that show so it could be analyzed. I just got the feeling that it would be interesting to dig a little deeper into Pak as to how JB was behaving and how he acted towards Shannan when they first got back into the house.

Great show guys! If only the cross boarder liquor laws weren't there, I could send down some "real" beer from Canada! I've been following this case for some time. It had echoes of the awful Robert Picton murders in Vancouver, and similar in that it involves missing sex workers. But from what I've read and understand of the case, I just can't believe that the "John" JB is involved. He's certainly a fool, but I just don't think he follows the pattern or has the profile of a killer: he wouldn't get his hands dirty. No, I think poor Shannon had a drug episode and freaked out. It happens. But I think she stumbled across something in her panicked movements through the brush and the neighbourhood. I think the killer haunts his dumping ground. And poor Shannon may have encountered one of these visitations. Too Hollywood? Maybe. Beer: Beau's Lugg Tread. Stay awesome!

I agree. JB strikes me as being guilty IMO. He seemed to be a reasonably okay looking man who was affluent. Why would he need to pay a thousand dollars for a date? He had a former wife who at some point must have taken a chance on him. And why Craig's list? That kind of money would point to a more discriminating service. SG was in the house for three hours. It was only toward the end of the date that she became frantic. It was opined that at the beginning of the date, they might have stepped out for drugs (to the doctor?). Perhaps she was slipped a drug that scared her or maybe she was shown snuff films of his previous dates. The man would have to be a sadist to do this crime. He likes to get reactions from people like the little sister. I think it is a ring and some of the police are involved. I read an article about one of the policeman charged with corruption. MP just didn't want trouble. He is from another country and thought SG was just extending the date to make more money. The hyoid bone can break in strangulation but it is not conclusive. She was in the water for a long time and might have broken it from impact with the tides.

I just discovered your show and went to listen from the beginning, but April Tinsley is the first episode available. Will the earlier ones be reposted? Also, in his note, it doesn't strike me as an 07 that is the hard part to read. Looks like the - of the "7" belongs with the scratched out portion above it and the word there is "or". The lower case r looks just like the others and also like some of his p's, where he happened to follow the down line back up to hook it around to make an r instead of looping around the down line. I don't disagree that he seems to want to see his name in the news, just disagree that he specifically named a network or channel. Just my two cents. Wasn't sure where else to drop it. Excited to listen to more.

This is just a little piece of a theory, but here goes: (1) No LISK victim, except Shannan, ever managed to phone for help. (2) The LISK likes to use his victims' cell phones to call and torment family members. Conclusion: The LISK, before attacking, takes away the victim's cell phone, under an excuse such as he's prominent in the community and can't risk being photographed, etc., and offers so much extra money that they fall for it. So how did Shannan manage to call 911? Theory: she had two phones — one for her escort work, and one that was her own personal phone. (The escort phone could have been a burner, so maybe no one knows about it.) And maybe she handed over that phone when asked to, and then was choked or knocked unconscious, but when she came to, she knew she was in trouble, and maybe was in severe pain. (The second autopsy claimed that she'd had a hole either drilled or punched through her hyoid bone.) She freaked out and started demanding to leave, and maybe then revealed that MP was outside (maybe this was news to the LISK), so her attacker changed plans and tried to get rid of her, telling her driver she was crazy and wouldn't leave, etc., and hoping she was unsure what had happened. But by the time Pak came in, she was on her second phone to 911 and when JB saw this phone, he panicked and tried to grab it from her, but by then she was saying to the police, "They're trying to kill me." Maybe she thought Pak was in on it (and maybe he was) but in any case, she ran from every man she saw in the next few minutes. (Maybe this indicates that Pak was involved, or maybe it's just what she said in terror — anyone who's had a hole drilled in her head might be a little mixed up on pronouns.) So she ran from the house in one direction, Pak ran in the other direction, taking the car, and someone tracked her down while she was lost in the swamp, probably screaming for help, and that person killed her. Anyway, I am down with the Captain's remarks about people who scared her and made her run being responsible for what happened to her, regardless of what can be proved about murder, and I don't understand why the D.A.'s office hasn't charged JB with 2nd degree manslaughter, "causing the death of another individual through reckless action," if they can't do better. The maximum sentence is 15 years; Brewer is 52 now. If they keep on waiting and doing nothing, how much time will he ever realistically serve on any charge? Anyway, guys, GREAT show — keep up the good work, fight the good fight, drink the good beer, and turn up the heat on these ppl.
