September 25, 2007, A call to 911 reports the finding of a dead body. The body is of a female who has been killed and dumped in a ditch near a parking lot. Someone had set the body on fire attempting hide evidence and the girl's identity. Police were able to pull surveillance footage from the cameras watching the nearby parking lot. On the footage they can clearly see a man dragging what appears to be the body of a women from a car. Shortly after there is a huge flash of light. This is the fire being set. Police use what information they can from the video and that information leads them to the doorstep of Melanie Goodwin's parents. This week we discuss the tragic death of Melanie Goodwin and the tracking of her killer.

Once again, a great podcast. These cases are hard to hear, but necessary I think. At first, I was afraid this a-hole had gotten away with murder, but I'm so glad to hear he was caught and convicted and the jury wasn't swayed by his 'boo-hoo, woe is me' story these pieces of s**t. The captain is so right here - life is a series of steps that build a person to who they are. Yes, people take the wrong path and get back on it, but this dick went off the path and refused to get back on it. But Nic is right too - often times (and I've certainly done it) we villianize the parents of these monsters, when in reality, (in many cases) these were good people who tried to raise good people and failed. The Goodwins comforting the criminal's mother was nice - they are parents who have lost their children through an act of violence and they are families who are hurting. Cases like these I wish we had a harsher justice system - as a society, for some reason, we stand behind the criminal. We cry about how the death penalty is 'cruel and unusual', that these people need to be rehabilitated, and blah blah, but what about the victims? Like in this case, this poor girl was assaulted, strangled, and then set on fire. Is that not cruel and unusual? Do we honestly think this asshat is sitting in jail and feeling bad about what he's done? No! He's not. He's sitting there getting three meals a day, getting bigger than he is now, free health care, free education, etc. Why does he get the life that his victim didn't? Okay, to quote a show "I got a little hot. Got hot real fast". And yes, I will check out your bra site! :)

As far as the human race he is the worse we have to offer. He didn't act like a human should he acted like a monster. Captain

The Captain is just telling it like it is. Yes, this guy represents the worst that humanity has to offer. Regardless of who you are and what you stand for, this young woman's life was worth far more than Reyes and his need for depravity. How much could she have accomplished had she not crossed paths with a monster? How much has this guy ever had to offer? There is no contest.

Fyi You can have a warrant of arrest for not paying traffic fines, the kwikmart couldnt have possibly have known that he would commit such a heinous crime. You cant sue someone for someone else's action and he clearly wasn't seen as such a big threat if the ex gf was willing to pick him up eventually.

You guys are awesome! Keep doing your thing. One of these days I am going to donate to your Beer Fund, I promise. I know it's been done to death, but would you guys ever consider doing the John F Kennedy conspiracy? I believe Oswald acted alone, but I am always up for what others think of the story. Perhaps the theories that have been thrown around concerning Marilyn Monroe's death - was it really suicide?

Does it piss off anyone else when a body is burned? Any mutilation is horrible, but to me that's the ultimate act of insult to mankind.

I've recently been listening and this was by far my favorite episode so far. You guys crack the occasional joke, but never at the expense of a victim and always seem to treat these stories as tragedies, not entertainment.

I enjoy how the Captain plays Devil's Advocate and suggests alternative viewpoints. That's how good research is presented - if you just submit the one side, the public doesn't get the whole story. With everything that has come out recently about fake news stories and sites, I think the Captain should keep on doing him.

Love your podcasts! I just discovered it! I used to work in a gas station/convenience store. We were trained that if anyone was loitering for more than a half hour we were told to tell them they had to leave. If they didn't we called the sheriff's department. We had a direct line right to them. No way would I have let anyone hang around that long. We have had these kinds of things happen in Michigan. One case a few years ago a mom was killed by her ex after she closed the store. She asked a customer to stay with her for a while because her ex was loitering and the customer did, but only for a few minutes. She never called the cops. And Jessica Herringa. You had to of heard about her from Muskegon, MI. They have got the guy, but still no body. Her kidnapping/murder happened when I was still work at a gas station. My hubby wasn't happy when I told him I wasn't to quit my job. Anyway, love you dudes! Keep up the good work!!!
