Is there anyone who has passed from the last elder care home where he worked whose name is being currently used? Or was used in other states after "Paul" moved? Or another situation where a elderly person had a dead son that would be about his age that suddenly has popped up alive in another state?

Hi, great episode guys. My thought is I wonder if he could have been in a witness protection situation. Maybe the phone call was him checking in with the Feds and then them helping to move him to a new location.

The Invisible Man case reminds of the disappearance of Richard Colvin Cox from West Point in 1950. He was born in 1928 in Mansfield, Ohio.

Interesting parallels between Richard Colvin Cox and Paul Raymond Harrod: 1. Cox was born in Mansfield, OH—a 90 minute drive from where Skippy Harrod was born in Lima, OH. 2. Cox was a cadet at West Point , about an hour away from Yonkers, NY where missing Harrod claimed to have gone to Roosevelt High School.

Great episode. If I was guessing, I doubt the individual had any relationship w/ Skippy or his family. I predict he was given or paid for a new identity from someone who knew how to get the documentation in order. I predict this was done either by an organized crime organization or law enforcement of some sort. Both of these groups would be able to generate a new identity for him. I wish there was a way to determine if this was the result of either witness protection or some undercover investigation where he was required to "blend in".

If the details about his ex-wife are genuine, a LexisNexis subscription and a few pointed search queries is all it should take to uncover his real identity.

This was an interesting story, I may have missed this part, but what I kept wondering was how he was using that young boys SS# without it coming up as a deceased person like if he did anything like opening a bank account, or anywhere they run the social through a data base. It is all such a mystery though! Thanks for being so awesome Nic and Captain! Take Care, Lori

I wonder if his wife remembers what logo was on that jacket. If he already had it when she met him, which seems likely given the amount of time they were actually together, maybe it could be a clue as to where he was previously. It doesnt look like a retail article of clothing. It looks like something an employer would embroider and give to staff. I cant really tell what it says. Looks like it says Chitty or Chatty to me, but I'm basically blind so....

  • Probably going to get grief over this but... If Paul R Harrod is in danger, maybe its not the best idea for us to try and find him, for his own safety. Adults have the right to go missing. He didn't break any laws in leaving. Assuming someone else's identity, sure, that's against the law, made a federal crime in 1998, but the statute of limitations is most likely up for that by now. Yes, his wife wants answers after 26 years, that's normal, but at this point, she doesn't need answers. Perhaps after so long, its best to leave it be.

If Paul is running for his life he can tell Law Enforcement they will protect him or leave him in hiding. The point here is this guy whoever he is is running from the Law as well. There’s so many good questions and possibilities being listed here. A follow up episode is in order - I have answers to most of these. We will go over everything on Mondays Off the Record episode - Cheers Nic

Great episode as always. Am I the only one thinking the wife must know more? I got the impression the detective was implying that maybe she is mentally challenged? Reporting your husband missing after 6 months must be at least weird if not suspicious. Even if she had nothing to do with his disappearance surely she must be able to provide some more info about this guy, did he have any particular accent, was he into any sport, did he show any particular skills/background (was he particularly informed about a specific subject?) what did he say about his past? Did he mention places, dates, names or anything else worth checking? I mean I can't imagine being married with someone for 6 months and not being able to provide some more information on that person.

I’ve worked for dealerships for most of my career. Regarding the vehicle, there’s is probably an almost 100 percent possibility the car was abandoned and when the police ran the license plate, discovered there was a lien and contacted the bank. At that point it was up for repo and they sent it to auction to recoup some cost. The dealership would’ve purchased it for used car inventory. It’s at least a lead to pick up his trail in Colorado whether he left the vehicle or something happened to him.

I would bet just about anything that this guy was a spy. It's the end of the cold war, peristroika and glastnost were in full swing. I think he was brought home by his government. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I recently listened to "Deep Under Cover" by Jack Barsky. I highly recommend the book! But stuff this Paul guy did sounds awfully familiar. Great episode guys! Cheers! 😃🍻

Have they checked the employee records of the nursing home where Skippy's dad was the year he passed? Maybe someone remembers an employee that left abruptly on or around that year that may fit the description of The Invisible Man.

This can't have anything to do with the case, but the name Margaret Colleti stood out to me as soon as I heard it on the episode. There is a King of Queens episode where Doug writes a song to his ex girlfriend - Margy Colletti. I assumed Margy was short for Margaret. Again, not related to the case. I just thought it was ironic and funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCFUcpu3bfk

Hey I just listened to this and the way he spelled is “mother’s” last name Coletti is not a very common last name. I should know it’s my last name. The only time I’ve heard it outside my family was this episode. The more common spelling is colletti. My uncle has been obsessed with his family tree he’s been making for years so let me know If there’s any way I can help.

Why leave 50 dollars in the bank account instead of taking it all? He must have needed to keep that amount in the bank to keep the account open and to not have a monthly charge. He needed leeway to go back to the account again. Also dna, dna, dna. There has to be something Marla still has (anything at all!) to find his DNA. All of these cases (well the vast majority) will have DNA evidence solve so many crimes. If he was in witness protection or a spy etc. police enforcement would eventually know that and not go digging around. And lastly, why would you marry someone who had 0 not even one relative? Anywhere? Period?

I'm agreeing with a couple other opinions on here. I think he was a cold war spy. He is too good at disappearing and finding good ways to avoid detection. I will disagree though in that I believe less that he was pulled out by his country and more that he may have been assisinated or hunted by his own country to avoid leaks or liabilities. He may have gone AWOL or rogue. The fact that he seemed to put down roots and then just leaves almost without trace because of one phone call leads me to organizational involvement. I would think maybe mob but the problem is he is just too good at disappearing in my mind. His confession of that to his wife "I can disappear at any time, I know how." is fishy to me, more than jsut simple mob involvement. I know it may seem far fetched and a bit cliche, maybe even Deus Ex-ish, but crazy crap happened in the cold war. Timeline is really conspicuous.

I'm sure this has been checked into, but what about checking to see who may have worked at the nursing home Skips dad was at when he was there, that left shortly after or right before he died? Someone the older gentleman spent a lot of time with...a male nurse or caretaker. I also thought about the Witness Protection Program thing. Is there a way for law enforcement to check on that? Great show guys!

I would speculate mob connection. Connection to NY and Las Vegas + the Italian last name of his mom listed. Maybe the scar was from a hit that he survived. That would connect why he could not go to the cops. Or he is just a crook on the run, but if the cops were closing in we would know. If he was savvy maybe the bank account is a false lead to confuse anyone looking - lead trail north when he went west.

Hey Guys! I did some digging and found that there was a Dianna Rae Samples that passed away just a couple months ago in Witchita, KS. At the time of her death she was 70 years old, so the right age to have been the ex-wife. She has living siblings who could look at the picture of “Paul.” Additionally, she had two sons that each passed away as young adults, but no mention of a husband or ex-husband. I am willing to bet this is the Dianna Rae!

The witness protection theory has too many holes in it for me. First, why would the US Marshals Service (which runs the program) move him in such a way that would cause a big mystery and media attention? Even if Marla doesn't want to go with him, there are other ways than to just suddenly vanish. Not only that, but the Feds can't pay off a Geo Metro??? Second, once "Paul's" disappearance is investigated by local law enforcement, the USMS could have contacted the sheriff or police chief and some cover story could have been created that would gave wrapped things up without revealing "Paul's" status. Third, like they said on Off The Record, the USMS would most likely create a whole new identity without using the records of a deceased child. That's more like something from "The Americans". He's on the run from the mob, or he was a spy (more like the guy that worked in the biohazard lab in "The Americans" than a Philip Jennings) seem more plausible than witness protection.

Could he have been former KGB? Considering the time, details, and the fact that law enforcement didn't seem to know who he is, perhaps he is/was a Russian spy. The story sounds so familiar to the Martha/Clark marriage on "The Americans" that I had to reach out and comment!

Very interesting episode. I'd be glad to help searching for anything I can in Kansas City on this case. @Nicolette: You may want to listen to more of their shows before you accuse Nic of being racist on the sole issue of him not covering any crimes against minorities. Episodes 163 and 164 cover James Byrd Jr brutal murder by a racist white man. I can't remember the victims name now but there was also the episode/cases about the woman killed in a church which I think is still unsolved. There are probably others but I can't remember without looking back through them all. Hopefully I'm not accused of being rude to women now...

Very interesting episode. I'd be glad to help searching for anything I can in Kansas City on this case.

@Nicolette: You may want to listen to more of their shows before you accuse Nic of being racist on the sole issue of him not covering any crimes against minorities. I don’t think Witness Protection uses the identities of dead children to create new identities for people.. Sounds like an opportunistic career criminal to me. I definitely wouldn’t rule out a mob connection.

I don’t see where Nic is being rude to females?? First, Meghan was rude to him. If u don’t like the podcasters it’s easy to not listen. Or maybe u don’t listen, but like to hide behind your keyboard and just post rude stuff!? Nicolette, your comment doesn’t really make a lot of sense. Maybe u need just a couple more English courses. ? Captain/Nic. I love your podcast. Your research is always so in depth. Keep up the good work!!

Huh. This one confuses me more than the others Idk. Has anyone cross referenced the high school yearbooks with a photo? I know it will be a needle in a haystack but if there is any chance. It just seems very shady like mafia shady. Weird that he left 50 dollars in his account, maybe someone needs to keep a close eye on the wife. Her story makes no sense. He could have stolen someone else’s identity after his disappearance?

@ Meghan - I am assuming the police would have contacted the US Marshals Office in case of Witness Protection. So it seems less likely as an option. Though it was one of the first things I thought of when they were first explaining his disappearance.

Nic - for the record, I think you seem like a pretty cool guy and I can't imagine you being rude to anyone who doesn't deserve it. Nic and the Captain - this episode was really interesting. How cool would it be if you helped identify this guy through your podcast? I think there might be a real shot this could happen, in light of certain other bread crumbs. Also, I vote that you should somehow improve this commenting format on here! Keep up the amazing work guys.

At this point, were he in Witness Protection the investigators would have been warned off. However, the Marshall Service doesn’t use dead kids for new identities. They create whole new ones for this very reason. Dead kids can be traced just like Skippy. Nic & The Captain have long advocated for People of Color and women. Don’t be snippy at them to begin with. Familial DNA may be the only way to trace him.

This one keeps intriguing me. I was thinking about when you mentioned that he may have worked at a home that the father of the real Paul, that died as a child. The father may have kept the child's hospital birth certificate. These are keepsake items and not a legal document. However, until 9-11 many places, including DMV, Employers, SSN office and US Passports would accept them as valid proof of identification. Even if he only borrowed it and made a copy, and returned it later. Also, if he truly wanted to disappear why leave a trail with the bank and later the car? Unless, it is just a false trail? Which makes more sense. When looking at the marriage certificate I decided to look into some old photos online of Margaret Coletti's there is one family photo where he has the same mouth and some other facial features of, but the nose is way off. Downside is that this Margaret would have to be a grandmother. Even one of the men had the same hair but parted on the opposite side. I read the articles about when the real Paul Raymond Harrod died. What a tragedy that was. When I have time, I will hit my ancestry sites some more and see if I can find anything with the Coletti families.

It's too bad they didn't collect fingerprints on items he used in the home before he disappeared. They could run them periodically and see who he's pretending to be now, and probably who he was before he posed as Skippy.

Nic, So the 1950 census is still sealed until 2022. There's a 72 year seal on census records. There does happen to be tons of scuttlebutt around the web that this may be Joey "Little Joey" DeRose Jr. Who was supposedly hit by the Youngstown Mafia in 1981 but whose body was never found. He would've been 32 in 1981, so born in 1949. There was a shootout between "Little Joey" and the hitmen, so it's possible he got shot in the head but survived somehow which would explain the scars. As far as how he would've come across Paul Raymond Harrod's name or potentially Paul M Harrod is not clear to me yet. It's crazy how far down the bunny trail you can go on some of these.

Thank you Kyle I was the one that originally proposed to detective Lockhart that the invisible man is actually Little Joey. I made that connection the weekend after he approached me about this case. It makes sense with the exception that Lockhart has been told by authorities that little Joey definitely was shot probably multiple times. Marla has never confirmed these type of scars on the man she was married to. I still think it’s a possibility. Cheers Nic

Another great show guys. I've only just listened to this episode as I'm working my way through this year's episodes. I see some people have already come up with the witness protection angle. I must say I don't think this is too far fetched. When given a new identity it's not unusual for law enforcement to use identities of genuine deceased people even more so those under 16 as there is no social security record of them, only a birth & death record. When placed in witness protection and given a new identity you must agree to leave any life you had behind you and never contact or discuss the 'old person' hence no family at the wedding and not giving any explanation of the scar. But is it possible his wife does know more than she has told Law Enforcement. Maybe he went against protocol after X number of years thinking he was safe. Maybe he told his wife something and that if he was ever found both their lives and family lives would be in danger. Is it possible she didn't report him missing for 161 days as she knew he would never be coming back? This would give him a head start to become 'invisible' again. Maybe she only reported him missing after the loan agent suggested it as by not doing it would create even more suspicion. As this is technically a missing person and no crime is evident as there is nothing to suggest this person has stolen an identity only that he is using an identity it would be highly unlikely for Law Enforcement to confirm or deny that there is any involvement of witness protection even to another Law Enforcement agency.

Hello my TCG crew! The Det. you were interviewing on this episode was mistaken. I was born and raised in Yonkers and graduated from Roosevelt HS in 1991. There has only ever been just 1 Roosevelt HS in Yonkers. Now, there may have been (and still might be) other Roosevelt HS's in the surrounding area (Bronx, Manhattan, etc.) but not in Yonkers. Keep in mind the mafia was a very real presence in Yonkers back in the 70's & 80's so anything's possible with this case. It's anyone's guess what this guy was hiding...

I have what some may call "shirttail relatives" with the last name of Harrod from the Wichita, KS area. There's even more than one Harrod with the middle name of Raymond. They are also some what dark complected, similar to "Paul", from Native American and French Canadian decent. I'm sure this is all information that the authorities are aware of, but thought maybe I'd share with others that also mentioned ties to Wichita, KS. Maybe Skippy's family is from the area?
