June 15, 1989 - Port Saint Joe Florida... A woman driving on highway 98 pulls off of the road and into the parking lot of a covenience store and parks her car. She notices that she had parked next to a white Toyota cargo van and she could see a man with a mustache sitting in the driver's seat. She goes into the store and when she comes out she can see that the Toyota has left but before she gets in her car she spots something lying on the asphalt in the empty space next to hers. It was a polaroid photograph and the image on it would frighten a community and a nation. Come into the garage and get out of the heat as we discuss the weird story of the photograph.

The image on the boys shirt looks like like Hobbes from the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.

The boy's shirt appears to have a small cartoon dog figure on it. Possibly the dog has an eye patch like a pirate or a black spot over the eye.

This is not Tara Calico. The shape of the eyebrows don't match and the bone structure along the forehead do not match. The girl in the photo is younger than 19...I guess she's about 14. Also, it's not likely a photo of Tara from New Mexico would be found in a parking lot in Florida. This photo is mysterious, but I bet it's a hoax left there on purpose.

This photo has disturbed me ever since I saw it profiled on Unsolved Mystery's YEARS ago. I also heard a few years back that it was proven a hoax? Sounds like that's not the case if Tara's Mother states it's her. A Mother would know. Great show guys!

THE BOY'S SHIRT Darryl from Toronto: good work - I think you're on to something there!! Sandy G. re: the boy's shirt: Calvin and Hobbes would play pirates in the comic strip quite often, so I think that's what you're keying in on. It looks to me like you and Darryl are both correct. Furthermore, I think THE GIRL'S SHIRT is also a Calvin and Hobbes shirt. Once the suggestion was made, I looked at it again, and it resembled a series of frames of Calvin & Hobbes dancing or running. I Googled it and found some very similar shots of vintage (probably unauthorized) Calvin and Hobbes/Grateful Dead mash-up T-shirts. IT GOT CREEPY, not only b/c of the van in the story and the stereotypical connection with the Grateful Dead, but also b/c of the song lyrics that appear as a caption on all of the shirts I found online: "THE KIDS THEY DANCE AND SHAKE THEIR BONES" (holy. shit.) Google it and see if you agree

I own that VC Andrews book. It is about a young girl who is raped in the woods and her family brain washes her so that she thinks it did not happen to her but to someone else. There are no young boys victimized in the book and no bondage. It would seem to me like an indicator that the girl is Tara. She could certainly just be a younger looking girl. I always was and it was humiliating that people thought I was in high school when I was in my 20s. I agree that a mother knows her child. I would recognize my son anywhere.

I just compared the photographs of Tara to the woman in the photo and found the woman in the photo has a much smaller nose than Tara. Tara's is far more pronounced. I do not think it is a match.

I really hope I am right about this case: When I first looked at the photograph my immediate thought was, "those kids are playing." What if the "cargo van" was just a van. Witness testimony isn't always accurate and a mustached man driving a cargo van meets two of the top stranger-danger criteria. Maybe the woman missed these two kids in the store while their dad waited in the car. My thought was that this was a family on vacation and dad or mom took this picutre as a joke to show what measures they took to get the kids to behave. Here are somethings that I noticed about the photograph that make me think it was not a kidnapper photographing their victims: 1. There isn't a mark on these kids. The girl's face, arms, and legs are all free from brushing or scratches. They are also very clean, even though the humidity is getting to the girls hair. I've never kidnapped anyone, but I imagine trying to contain two kids, one who is almost an adult, would be a difficult task. Something would have to give. Either the kids get dirty or they would have marks of them from being grabbed and forced to places. 2. These children are also very tan. They don't look like they've been locked inside for months. 2.5. The girl still looks like she has a decent amount of muscle. Muscle starts to deteriorate quickly. 3. There is a floral blanket and a blue blanket, hers and his. It seems like these could have just been taken off their beds for the trip. 4. The age difference between the two. It seems unlikely that someone would target a young boy and a girl in her upper teens. I think most of these sickos have a type that usually isn't that broad. 5. The girl looks relaxed, albeit, annoyed. She looks like she would be near the door and she didn't move away from it when the door would have been opened. The boy on the other hand looks like he's half laying between a gap in the bed and the cabinet. That could be out of fear or he was getting into something. There is also a discarded piece of tape folded over just in front of the boy. Making me think there wasn't a struggle. Anyway, I hope for the sake of these children that I'm right. This was just a joke picutre found by someone who didn't know the context. That could explain why no other families came forward to claim these children, because they aren't gone. As far as Tara Calico, I really hope this sheriff comes forward with more information. I'm not sure why he would say the things he said if he didn't know something about what happened to her. As far as Tara being the girl in the picture, they do look similar, but so do a lot of other missing girls. In my opinion, the girl in the picutre looks younger with a more narrow face. Tara looked older than 19 to me and her cheeks were more full. It's hard to judge, though, when it's one picture of someone with duct tape on half their face.

Cleanliness, that's what struck me also. The girl is very clean and her t-shirt looks brand new. Also bedding looks clean. My one question that didn't get answered in the podcast was if Tara's mom thought that was her was she wearing those clothes that's she's wearing in the photo. There was no mention of what she was wearing when she was last seen. Also I question the woman who found the photo. Was she suspicious when she parked next to the van. Why would she pick up the Polaroid, especially if it was upside down? Most people don't pick up random things in parking lots. Also maybe it was there before the van was parked there. To me the book it the photo looks like it was deliberate as if it was a clue or explanation. Or reenactment somehow of the story in the book. So many different ways of reading this photo......

I'm not convinced at all that the boy is wearing a Calvin and Hobbes tee. I have never been a fan of that comic strip, but Hobbs is a tiger, not a dog. I googled Calvin and Hobbes/ and the GD lyrics you posted, and the girls shirt could possibly be that of them dancing.. but the second figure on the tee doesn't seem to match the Calvin and Hobbes strip...

Star, I think her shirt is torqued/twisted around a bit to her right and bunched up under her right arm. Read the design from (our) right to left, and bear in mind that if it's silk screened on fabric, it could be stretched or distorted a little. Also, a version of the C&H/TGD shirt that looks even closer is captioned "New Speedway Boogie"; you might search for that one. There was a good photo from Ebay that showed up in my results. Nickie, I see what you mean - could be!

It was said by experts that the Polaroid in question could not have been taken before May of 1989, as that Polaroid film wasn't available/invented yet.. so I highly doubt she was abducted in those clothes, (disappeared Sept, '88), and I doubt she was wearing the same thing for almost a year..

Back again... Does any think she could be wearing an Egghead Software shirt? Once I got home and was able to zoom in on a bigger screen, I agree with what some people are saying that she's wearing an Egghead Software shirt. @Nickie - I go back and forth between dog eyes and pull knobs for a cabinet. Either way, it's amazing how creepy a dog's eyes can look in pictures. I have the sweetest dog, but she look downright sinister sometimes. So far that's been the only thing that's made me jump about this photo. @Beth - I was thinking more about the boy's expression because, I agree, he does look like he's going through something. I started to think that maybe with all the parents, recently, posting pictures to social media of their kids bound with duct tape as discipline, what if that's what this was. These kids got in trouble, the boy is more sensitive, and the girl is pissed because she has tape on her mouth. I'm sure some parents taping their kids mouths didn't start when Facebook was created. Maybe, just maybe, he's trying not to laugh. I really hope he's trying to not laugh. I was also thinking, if this is a girl who has been kidnapped, why on Earth would she request her kidnapper get her a book that features incest and rape? If it were me I'd request the happiest damn book I could think of. If it was Tara, surely she liked other books. I almost turned this week's episode off a few minutes into it. Right around the time the guys took a break. The photo didn't stand out to me, it just looked staged. (Then again, I'd probably be one of those people who swears she saw a mannequin.) I kept on, though, because I love Nic and the Captain and I'm really glad I did. This has been the only case so far that I've really been wrapped up in the maybes and what ifs.

Katie, shes wearing an Egghead Software T-shirt. That's it!! The second character is the same as in the Egghead picture. What does this mean, or how can this help? If 300 possible phone numbers were potentially pulled from the spine of that book, could you find out if anyone at those numbers worked for the software company..??

"I was also thinking, if this is a girl who has been kidnapped, why on Earth would she request her kidnapper get her a book that features incest and rape? " LOL, is there some law that says the kidnapped person gets to request what they want to read, and the kidnapper has to comply?

Star, definitely a good call on the shirt! I looked at some older fiction novels I have that are circa 70s & 80s and it looks like a lot of them have a serial number printed towards the south end of the spine. I personally can't see anything written on the spine of the book. I also don't particularly think that this girl is Tara Calico. If you look at Tara's main photo on Wiki, you can see that she's pretty fair and freckled. She also has obvious forearm hair. None of those characteristics are obvious on the girl in the picture. In my view, the kids in the picture are related. Most kidnappers don't usually take two kids at a time because it can increase liability - one gets free, goes for help, kidnapper is caught. And if they did kidnap two kids in tandem, going across country with them is even riskier. What's odd to me is that no one else has really come forward about the picture either to claim one or both children are theirs whether they be missing or if it was a hoax.

I have always presumed that it is a boy in the pic like most, but in reality I don't think that is an absolute. It could be a younger girl with hair tied back. Prepubescent it isn't that easy to discern if you think about it. Something about the pic, the short hair and the face does come off as male, however it still could be a female. These pics look like trafficking pics to me, just like the ones associated with the Johnny Gosch case. I think it's unlikely pics like these are jokes. The girl looks more than annoyed, she's looking at the photographer with contempt like the piece of shit he probably is. The other child whether male or female is looking with pleadingly desperate eyes full of fear.

I haven't listened to the entire episode yet so this might have been stated but I noticed right away the girl doesn't look like she's wearing Shorts/Skirt that looks possibly like a black trash bag wrapped around her waist area like a make shift diaper. The trim looks very rigid too almost like plastic. I don't know how this helps, just something I observed. Great Show.

Why is everyone so set on the long haired individual being a girl? Is it because Tara's mom says its her? If not for that would everyone be saying it's a girl? Because to me it looks more like a guy. The face doesn't look very feminine at all in my opinion...

This is a reasonably well known photo, even in other countries. Wouldn't you think if this was a hoax that the kids would have told friends or family about it by now and that information would have filtered back to authorities or the media?

Hello, Professional image retoucher here. Is there a larger image size available? the resolution is so low that even if i open it up in photoshop and zoom in, it becomes pixelated.

The shirt looks like Baseball Stick Figure Letters, might spell a city, state or team, at first I thought it was White Sox, once I enlarged it to 400%, it could be Egghead, but you'd need to do some research for the 198's Not convinced of much else though, I think Tara is only similar in looks, but there's too much that doesn't match

If the girl is bound, why would the book even be there by her side? Seems like entertainment afforded only to a free and relaxed person on a long road trip.

Do these pictures remind anyone of the "who took Johnny" pictures? I just watched a documentary on Netflix about johnny being taken on his paper route and posed similarly with children.

I'm so drawn to unsolved mysteries, but I hate the fact that they are unsolved... I sit and think and wonder about them all of the time. This image is so incredibly sad to me. I don't think it's a hoax. I think that because of the age difference and the difference in sex, they were sold into sex trafficking. Polaroids were a lot safer than getting film like that developed, I'm sure the captures took many Polaroids and mailed to different sex traffickers to get bids. I'm sure that the photo dropped out when the door was opened. It's not unusual for captures to grab kids from all over the country and end up in Florida to do the trading. What's sad is that they were probably taken to another country. I think more people are quick to assume it's a hoax because of the era we live in now. It's a sad tragedy for these kids. "Over 2 million men, women and children are trafficked, worldwide, annually. It's a 34 Billion dollar industry. The US isn't the #1 exporter, but it is the #1 destination"

The boys t shirt looks like two figures on the left, possibly animals, sitting down. I think there's a shadow on both of the figures. They are looking at what looks like a frame or something with darker spots in each corner, a horizontal stripe and a black ball. A horizon?

New to the garage...catching up on the older episodes. Really enjoyed this one. I tried to track down some different images of Tara Calico to compare to the "photograph". I found one with her head facing the same direction and hair up and did a side by side comparison linked below. The other photo was found at www.taracalico.com Some thoughts: -The ear seems to have a unique shape in both photos -If it is Tara in the "photograph", she may have lost some weight in the face due to captivity -Eyebrows seem differently shaped, but women often use makeup to distort shape of eyebrow and "photograph" female seems to almost have a scowl expression -Nose seems to be shaped different but could *appear* that way due to tanning and flash reflection -Tape may be pulling on skin forcing slightly different appearance as well https://s27.postimg.org/uw4agtdj7/new1.jpg Brad

I have been a fan of podcasts for several years I sometimes have to venture out to find new things to listen to. I stumbled upon the garage. So what I normally do is find a podcast and download all the available ones so i can listen to them at work. Anyway I download all the true crime garage podcasts that are available from the app I use. I get to work and the first episode I turn on is this one, which completely blows my mind! I live in the town (grants,nm) which Micheal Henley is from and I remember his disappearance well as it was a huge deal I was around five at the time but I remember my grandfather being part of the search party. I have done a fair amount to research on his disappearance and have spoken to a number of people who were part of the search party what, I find odd is that some people say that he was not at the place that his remains were found if he was that someone would have found him because of the size of the search and the amount of people looking for him while others believe that he was taken back after he was dead and the search party stopped looking.

Great episode. I listened to this episode at the beginning of an over night train ride. I didn't sleep a wink all night. There are parts of this that look staged (you could see some mom posting a hopefully less creepy photo on Facebook with a comment like "what happens when the kids don't stop fighting on a road trip".). But the fact that NO ONE has ever come forward on this tremendously high profile photo - even more high profile in the area where it was found - really gives me pause. Finally, I just attested that I was not a robot. But what if I was a robot, but had a good point of view anyway. Why the Robot Hate.

Great episode, I've never heard of this photograph before. Couple of observations: 1. Isn't a 10 digit number on the spine of a book most likely to be that book's ISBN (International Standard Book Number)? It wasn't clear whether the number people see was printed or written (I can't make it out myself). 2. The creepy glowing eyes spotted above the boys head are just part of the vehicle interior trim. They are clear in the uncropped picture at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Tara_Calico Intriguing case. I just can't decide whether the photo is a fake, an innocent prank gone wrong, or actual evidence of a crime.

I know this doesn’t matter, and this is old. But the “King” grocery store you were thinking of in this episode that you mistakenly called Lion King, I believe you meant King Soopers which is part of and owned by Kroger.
