Hey guys! I was wondering if we know how Gayle and Jeanette knew each other? When you're young, your friends are normally friends are geography-based. It was a little unusual to have a friend who lived 8 miles away especially before the internet. Did one of them move and they kept in touch, did they know each other from church, or a job or something? If it was in the show, I missed it. Thanks!

Hey, just wanted to say that I totally agree that the items around her seem more like a makeshift grave, possibly indicating a degree of guilt felt by the killer, but I do not agree that the crosses preclude it from being a pagan killing. Crosses were adopted by Christians and predate Christianity by a couple thousand years. Polytheistic pagan religions are the origin of triune deities which is what the cross symbolizes. The nerd in me just wanted to point that out lol

Hi all! So I’m from Union County NJ literally a town over from Springfield and my house is directly behind the Watchung reservation (pronounced Watch-Ung) and I also grew up in Westfield NJ (where the List murders happened) and spent a lot of my teen years hanging out in the Watchung reservation. Also my mother grew up in Westfield as well and was a teen in the 70s who was into witchcraft (in that she listened to Stevie Nicks and wore crystal jewelry) and also hung out in the reservation and the most she ever did there was hike and smoke pot, same with my friends. It’s a pretty normal place to hang out, there are a lot of cool creepy stories surrounding parts of it like the Deserted Village and the Enchanted Forest but is all just good innocent fun/normal teen stuff.

You guys should look into the Sandy Rea case. She went missing from a bowling alley in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1984. It's one of the towns biggest mysteries.

I understand John Lists concerns about his daughter's acting aspirations, I mean have you ever seen the film/read the novel Rosemary's baby? That's clearly the occult shit actors are getting up to. But all jokes aside, John List is a piece of shit, his whole "saving their souls" defense is a load of crap. He fled NJ and started a new life, with a new identity and evaded capture for nearly two decades, those are not the actions of a "noble Christian" man.

Hey Guys! I am absolutely loving this one! We moved to Mountainside, NJ a year ago and I have never heard of this case! Looking out my kitchen window I can see Watchung reservation to my left and the abandoned quarry to my right. They are definitely in close proximity to each other! Within a mile for sure! I don't think it would be out of the question that they are connected. I was a little creeped out today while doing my dishes! Keep up the amazing work!

This case seems like there is so much excess shit that figuring out what actually happened is more matter of eliminating false leads than pursuing real ones. I think barring some death bed confession, there is no way to solve it now. I'm curious about what you guys think about a suicide scenario or an accidental death scenario. Maybe both are ludicrous ideas given the rocks or sticks but without any definite cause of death it is hard for this listener to rule it out. To be fair, I think murder is more likely, but what could be the motive? Her clothes are on, which makes rape seem less likely, no obvious signs of trauma other than the lifelessness... Hit and run style cover up? Idk. I'm on the edge of my seat for the next two parts. You guys always make my driving job better, keep it up.

Could it be possible that John List killed her? That he somehow ran into her and tried to “save her” from going to hell?

Hey Guys, I'm glad that you guys are doing this case. It was a big thing growing up in Northern NJ in the late 70's and 80's. There was ALOT of weird things going on the area in those decades. Including "satanic and witchcraft stuff" all over the place but the Watchung Area was very active. The activity was from teenagers doing seances all the way to experienced adults doing rituals and animal sacrifice around there. I'm not saying directly that her death was due to a satanic ritual but that stuff was going at the time and I'm sure it was in many people's minds. There was also the believe that an undiscovered serial killer was responsible for her death. Several teenagers and young adult women went missing or were found murdered after being missing in NJ in early 70's.

My cousin lives in Fanwood, NJ (Scotch Plains-Westfield area) and is about a block from the high school, just a few minutes from the reservation. She grew up there in the 70s, I don't recall her ever mentioning this case but I will for sure ask all about it (and the List murders!) next time I talk to her!

Oh and to answer Beth in Chicago's question, my cousin used to skip school & get all tarted up at her friend's house, the two of them would hop on the bus in to NYC & get off in Midtown and cruise around for sailors - at 13 years old!!! And then be back home again before their parents got home from work, nobody was ever the wiser. So I do not think it was too super unusual to have friends 8-10 miles away, especially with the close proximity this area of NJ has to NYC - it is literally just a couple of train stops. They had friends all up & down the route in between the city & Fanwood-Westfield-Scotch Plains area, so I could see Jeanette doing the same.

I grew up in Westfield in the 70's also. There was always so much talk about satanic rituals and general weirdness going on in the Watchung Reservation. We'd go up there at night to look for witches. The Lost Village was a pretty creepy place too. There was also a huge water tower up this long path where we heard someone had thrown themselves off. We never found anything, but it definitely had a strange vibe to it.

Here is some info from my cousin that readers might be interested in regarding John List: Hi Cuz: I hear that you were inquiring about our John. A few factoids ... His entire family that he killed are all buried in the same cemetery as our Betty/Tom (along with Whitney Houston, not to mention Bobbi Christina). His daughter was a year or so younger than I, and attended the neighboring Westfield High School. Shortly after the deed, our high school gang used to run over to his mansion on Friday nights. We’d drive up the driveway (the front porch light was still lit as he left it) and scream bloody murder when we reached the ballroom window. Every teenage gang in the area did the same thing until the cops closed it down. Today it would’ve been closed immediately, but not back then. Leading up to the deed, he was fired from his NYC job but didn’t have the nerve to tell his wife (a battleaxe, we heard). To waste time before he would come home, he’d sit in his car in Westfield train station parking lot (where you dropped me off that night to go back into NYC). He’d also go over and sit in THE JOLLY TROLLY tavern bar ... a spot I frequented often before AND well after the event. They just demolished the building last year. We all forever wondered afterward just where the hell he went. Each anniversary, the local papers would relive the story ... for a full 17 years. My dad (many years later) often played tennis with the police sergeant who was in charge of the case at the time. That sergeant often got mad at my dad because my dad always beat him. When they finally found Johnnie, we were all (all surrounding towns) in huge unbelievable celebration mode ... almost as big as when we found Osama Bin Laden. Kudos to John Walsh for giving us all such incredible closure. Oh, and the house “mysteriously” burned to the ground several years later. Love, NYC Cuz

Hey Guys, Listening to Part 3 speculations on why Red left the woods. One thing not mentioned is he probably left when he heard a body had been found knowing the police, journalists, curious people were headed up there to investigate and look around and he didn’t want to be arrested for the crime AND ALSO because he’s trespassing. He’s obviously squatting on soneones land. Just like a typical “house” person, many times they have criminal backgrounds/warrants etc and tend to keep low profiles !!! Enjoy listening !! Try one of Tampa’s Cigar City brews !! You probably have bc they are “famous”. Keep up the good work. Lisa

I stayed in North Bergen/Union City for about a week a couple of years ago and I just wanna add that it’s really close to NYC. I didn’t think that fact came out in the episodes. From North Bergen you can easily get to Manhattan (for example Madison Square Garden) in like 17-18 minutes. It’s practically NYC on the other side of the Hudson. I don’t feel that having friends 7-8-9 miles away is anything strange in that setting and I also don’t find it strange that one would hitch a ride since there’s a lot of people going to and fro NYC in practically all directions. Just a thought.

Breeze Knoll was destroyed by arson on August 20, 1972, approximately 10 months after the murders. The crime remains officially unsolved.[35] Destroyed along with the home was the ballroom's stained glass skylight, rumored to be a signed Tiffany original, worth at least $100,000 at the time (equivalent to $590,000 in 2017).[33] A new house was built on the site in 1974.[35] You probably already read about the above Tiffany window. Ironic that it may have helped to solve his financial problems. He was probably determined to murder them all anyway. Sad story.

I find it hard to believe the brother that was mentioned could have carried her up that hill if she was not able to move on her own and it took a fire truck parked below using its latter. I work in NJ and there are plenty of woods to hide a body. If the brother did dump her body why choose the hardest possible place to do it. How close was the house party to the devils teeth, how would the body have been transported? Great podcast just started listening

I was 12 years old at the time of this murder, and lived a few miles away. There was a serial killer, Robert Zarinsky, who murdered as many as 5 teenage girls all over NJ between 1968-1974. He lived roughly 15-20 minutes away in Linden, NJ at the time of this girls death. Didn't anyone look into him being the possible murderer? I have only listened to 2 of these episodes.
