I am curious about lividity, how does it act in water? If she was placed head first a barrel out of the water for a length of time, the pooling would be around the head. Lividity could have really helped determine a barrel.

Sometimes I get feels when you talk about a case, this is one. It's a small thing but it nags me; finding her purse shoved in-between the mattress and bed, (I believe that's what they said they found). Why would that be shoved in there like that? It makes me think she was on top of it at some point. The lack of information on what was actually investigated is frustrating. I would want to know more about the bedroom, was the bed made?? The clothes, and the jacket, plus the beer cans... it seems things are just enough off, not right, to make me think she didn't end up in the pond because she fell in (barrel or not). Another equally frustrating thing is family going to check on her; if you're truly concerned about her why in the world would you delete a phone message? If you know this is not normal behavior for her, she would never cut off communication or miss work, something is wrong... even if the police don't take this seriously WHY? would you mess with the home (with the exception of feeding the dogs). I'm not faulting them, I just find this entire thing frustrating as hell.

This case has disturbed me since I saw it on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries back when I was just a cub. I feel for her family. Thank you for your coverage of another cold case. (It's Pizza Night at the VFW in case you were wondering. I'll have a slice in y'alls honor.)

Another job well done, guys! Cheers ! Sad, perplexing story this is. We know freak accidents happen but put together the various elements in this case (barrel, clothes, answering machine, car seat, messy apartment, etc), foul play seems an obvious answer. Also obvious, LE’s sloppy investigation. The suspicious guy at her job who showed unrequested interest in her should have been investigated further. However, as per the autopsy no strong evidence of violence, no sexual assault...Baffling, especially if she was taken somewhere and held captive. Could the underwater conditions alter these results ? You mentioned an unknown female’s photo, and that made me think that if a woman had carried out the attack then the autopsy’s result would make more sense to me. Maybe a former flame of her recently upgraded to serious boyfriend got angry at this news? Whoever did this was probably not super clever just got lucky that the investigators didn’t do a better job. Plenty of inconsistencies. Now, returning to retrieve the barrel would probably be the riskiest part. It’s almost like the killer needed inside info to know it hadn’t been removed and that there was nobody stationed there guarding the pond. Odd! Hope it gets solved one day!

I am not convinced there was a barrel. The water was very murky and visibility was bad. Plus, who takes the time to kill someone and dispose of them in a barrel in a lake....WITHOUT securing it with a lid?

@ Jody and Todd, The barrel - IF REAL - seems to me like a not very well thought out idea. I've got to get rid of this body, better to hide it, put her in the barrel, wait no put her in the pond. I would want to know the effort needed for the divers to pull her from the shallow depths of the water. She would have at some point most likely floated to the top. Did sometime any portion of her clothing to the barrel and use as a weight? Even a shoe string or jacket string? Adding to the idea that a barrel was used is the families statement that there was a barrel on the property and after Debbie's death - it was gone. The barrel on the property would have had holes in it as it was used for target practice at times. But of course there are some problems with the families theory but there is a reason(s) why this is an unexplained death case - we don't know or understand just what happened, why and how... Nic

I would like to know what the answer machine message actually said. I can't help but wonder if the men listening only thought the caller meant days. Did it say actually "You've missed several days of work now..." or was it more vague, like "You've missed quite a bit of work now..." and they took that to mean days. Maybe the caller really only meant hours. I am curious about the exact words left on the machine.

And, I dived in dark pond water, < 1 foot visibility, no way you mistake a jacket for a 55 gallon drum with holes in it. The diver’s vision is heightened by such an environment making any area of focus much clearer not prone to optical illusions. Also the reason why you use a drum in the first place is so you don’t sink carrying the body, one simply rolls the body in the water.

I think I lean more towards accident or maybe the dogs knocked her in and the weight of the clothes made it hard for her to get out. pair that with the cold, she could have gotten hypothermia and become disoriented or something. if there was a barrel, I agree with captain, no way it was anything other than foul play IF the barrel was there. totally baffling case. where did the men's clothes come from? were the dogs already off their tie outs when family came around the first time? that could be indicative of a timeline since they're tied up while she's at work.

I think the biggest thing is the way her house looked like in total disarray like someone or multiple people were hanging out at her house drinking beer and driving her car after whatever they did to her, that voicemail is a much bigger deal than I think people let on I’ve heard it it’s kinda creepy that person apparently was slick enough since he’s not been put in cuffs for this crime and there is no way that isn’t her stalker at work, the saddest part is Debbie’s entire family is pretty much gone her parents and both of her brothers all died not getting any justice

I remember hearing about this case years ago. Based on my own research I have a difficult time believing that foul play was not involved. Good episode guys.

Nic, your comment about date of death also reminds me of the Amy Mihaljevic case. The date of death for Amy was listed as the day her remains were located, not the date she went missing.

So no drugs or alcohol in toxicology. What makes you enter a pond in the middle of winter? The only thing I can think of is if my dog fell in. I'd be right in the pond after it. Could she have got waterlogged and drowned and the dog got out? Any muddy paw prints around the place? Is it likely... no of course not. But if she had an underlying heard condition and jumped in the water it is possible. Playing devil's advocate.

Just a thought... the barrel might have been used to float her body out... to then sink it... Either way the burn barrel from her yard was missing, no?

Or she could have been in her yard, tripped and fell headfirst into her burning barrel which knocked it over causing it to roll into the pond with her stuck inside.....(I'm clumsy like that) -ALSO- what carrie said ?

@ All - my comment above was not 100% accurate. We are both very much working this week but ran into some unforeseeable issues in this week's Garage recording sessions - so we had to scrap the damn thing! New episodes coming next week. If you need something to hold you over - listen to OTR its free for a month trial subscription. Sorry for the wait. Cheers Nic

Use some logic please and as you speculate and bring up John Douglas, remember it's the mid 80s. If you think the barrel was taken so it would look like an accident, why would the murderer put it there to begin with? Why would he wait a week for them to find the body to then go back and retrieve the barrel? What evidence could possibly be on the barrel that could link back to the killer? I call BS on the barrel. It wasn't there. It serves no purpose for a killer. My question to anyone who claimed to see q barrel they day would be why didn't you attempt to look in the barrel? Even with no visibility, they would've wanted to check it.
