There was another suicide at James Wade’s. Nick Lowery was the first suicide. Nick was the father of James (ex) step-grandchild. Our town has had crooked sheriffs for a long time and I always try to vote for the best option honestly Katy is handling this no differently than any of the other candidates which is disgusting. Most of the other candidates the past 20 yearswork with Katy or worked under her. I will say that many of the locals have been VERY vocal about this. There have been a few protests. I just want justice for Derontae and compassion for his family. I pray that whoever is responsible will pay. Btw look into his friend Jacob. He’s been involved in multiple incidents and Posted photos CLEANING the crime scene to his snapchat. The people at that party need to speak up.Even if Derontae were to have committed suicide, which I truly doubt after listening to his friends, there should be consequences for the things that happened at that party.

I am not a suicide expert, but I cannot imagine people go over to unknown homes, into attics, and kill themselves. That seems a little far-fetched. It never ceases to amaze me how lazy and/or uninterested certain law enforcement officials/departments tend to be. This family, from what you reported on and what I have read, most certainly deserve better treatment. I hope someone from that department is listening to this podcast and decides to take this case more seriously.

  • What kind of information is the family legally able to request? Can they sue for the autopsy and police reports? This case is just shrouded in so much mystery, but yet so easy to solve if people would talk. Heartbreaking!

RE: the image Wade posted about protecting his home Was this posted relatively immediately after Martin's death? If it was a couple months after it could have been in reference to the riots in the U.S. (though I doubt those were a legit threat to him in Fredericktown). That might explain the reason for the post, even if the other ones are terrible.

Hey guys! Just a few things about the phone… 1. The SIM card doesn’t store contacts, texts, calls, etc. The SIM card ONLY provides cell service to the phone. We used to have SD cards that stored that info but now it’s stored on the phone and iCloud or Google. If you remove the SIM card the phone still has all the info on it, just doesn’t have service. 2. There is a setting that you can set on an iPhone to wipe your phone completely after a certain amount of failed passcode attempts. But you have to intentionally set that setting. But then the phone would be on the welcome screen with ZERO information on it. 3. If the phone still had apps and other personal info on the phone then it was NOT wiped. That means the contacts and the texts were deleted individually. 4. If the family knows his iCloud or Google login they will be able to login on the computer and retrieve all the texts, calls, contacts, etc.

If that first minute of this podcast isnt enough proof that something is foul play i don’t know what is!!! in the 911 call he first says he’s dead I think after the dispatcher asked if he was breathing that’s where you have your proof right there I think the home owner Only called 911 thinking in his head he was dead and when he realized he was still breathing and gasping for air that’s when he refused to give CPR in my opinion and stalling because he knew if he lived the real truth will come out so he watched him laying there while On the phone with 911 watching him die making sure he didn’t survive!!!

Do you know this case reminds me of another case that was on unsolved mysteries where the guy went to a party and his friend just so happen to leave him there and the next day no one could find them so they supposedly searched and searched this river behind the farm and then the family shows up and within the first 30 minutes find him dead in a play supposedly the police checked out but they claim that his body his phone and none of his backpack was wet so there was clear proof he had not been there for that week in the water I feel this is somewhat the same case there’s more than enough proof that this needs more investigation and it’s a shame that you took an oath to serve your public and you’re not doing that by leaving this family familyWith questions more than answers

I am from MO and I believe what you say about that area being racist. I've never heard of where he lived but I have been up to st Louis and east st Louis many times. It's very diverse in the city but I know there are outlying areas where it's mostly white. After the Mike Brown case in Ferguson, I think people were so much more aware of the racism that goes on there. These people piss me off because it gives Missouri a bad name!!! I promise we are not all hicks and racists or meth heads!! This poor kid and his family. I feel for them. I really hope they find answers. And WHY THE HELL IS THERE NO INFO ON GSR?? That would clear this right up!!

In a previous comment I mentioned a jake but meant Zach. Jake is zachs brother. There have been probable three deaths on the property that I am aware of. 1. an overdose and I don’t have much info other than a middle aged women who was with JW. 2. Nick Lowery. I know this death occurred on his property and knew of Nick. I dated his older brother in middle school. Nick was JW stepdaughters child’s father. He always seemed full of life and happy. 3. Derontae Martin. The party that Derontae attended was held after our local prom. There are lots of stories of high students also attending this party. There are snapchat photos that my neighbor has seen and IMO is a very reliable source. The photos show Zack cleaning the crime scene. The scene had been cleaned some before the officers arrived and I’m sure the officers didn’t try and close the crime scene. The only white supremacy groups that I know are active is the SS. I only know this because they are very active in the prison population and we come from a VERY poor area where many people have been in jail or prison. Most are white so they end up joining gangs in prison for protection. As far as the drug dealing I know this for a fact. I don’t specifically know he sold meth but I can tell you the people who have accused him of it would know. I can try and answer any questions. This town is filled with lots of unsolved cases or half mysterious suicides. Gina Dawn, Doug Teel, Nick Lowery, Dusty Sutton, Derontae Martin. I’ve even asked an ex sheriff about the death of Doug Teel and he said he is sure it wasn’t a homicide. Dougs case is tragic too. I didn’t know Derontae but I’ve heard some amazing things about him. I’m so saddened by the way everything has been handled. There is a political divide in this town and it can be gross. Watch any of the protest videos. I recommend Derontaes protest when a counter protestor was carrying an assault weapon irresponsibly while standing by our sheriff. Notes: There are two zack Graham’s in this area. Keep this in mind if you’re searching Facebook

So regarding the phone, I know it's true for computer hard drives that when you delete a file the hard drive doesn't write over the data immediately it just marks that area for rewrite when the space is needed. If phones are the same then deleting contacts/messages would only appear that way and someone with a greater understanding of digital forensics than myself would know how to get that info back. Love the show, think you're both fairly handsome. Love, Dave from Nh

Love your shows; but bringing up the KKK in relation to this tragedy? That's a stretch. And BLM; each chapter is different. They don't march in the streets or demand justice whenever a black child gets killed in a drive-by. Which has happened hundreds of times this year in the midwest alone. And no one says their names because no one knows their names. The silence from BLM is deafening in regards to those cases.

Hi, guys! Thank you for bringing to light this very perplexing case. Just as you said, among people Derontae’s age, I could accept this tragedy was the result of some game/accident/dare, actions under the influence of drugs and then that a sort of cover up ensued by the youngsters involved. It is MUCH harder to believe that a guy who seemed fine and was working towards his goals, went out with friends , previously letting his mother know he would be given a ride to his grandmother and just decided out of the blue that a strangers’ attic, during apparently a gathering, was a good place and time to commit suicide. Moreover, inconsistencies in the autopsies, the data missing from his phone, background of the homeowner where the incident took place, plus other rumors, make a strong case for foul play. The biggest mystery here is why the police didn’t take the required and obvious steps, e.g. thoroughly investigating who was in the house at that time, everything surrounding the gun in question and on and on. Or if they did, why nothing seems to be done about it ? People need to rally for this cause. The way the investigation is right now sounds absurd. Cheers!

This case draws parallels with the Christian Andreacchio case. It baffles me how police can waltz on scene, glance around, and immediately announce a suicide.

I lived in Fredericktown MO 40+ until My Son 19 yrs old was murdered in 2010, July 15th MCSD was involved & it to has been covered up and I've been fighting for justice, 4 months later Thanksgiving weekend my house was burned down and we were forced to move. Anyway the first suicide/murder at the Wade home was Nick Lowrey 20 yrs old died Nov.1st 2014 shot himself with a shotgun/ family & friends Believe Nick was murdered. Nick was the bady-daddy of James Wade's daughter, Nick was born May 27th 1994... it's listed as a suicide! Rumor has it that there was a third person that died in that house & Wade was the owner at that time also... since the death of DERONTAE many Mother's have come forward (including myself) trying to get answers & justice for the wrongful death of their child (mostly sons) involving foul play and no one to tell that would check into it, or cared enough to get the help that is needed to put a stop to this ongoing death pool... it's taken place several times a year now and lists most of them as suicide... knowing it's murder!😭

For some reason part two is not up yet, but just listened on stitcher to part 2. So I will leave this here. I am so disappointed in this two part case. What makes all your cases so interesting is how you present the facts and allow the listener to weigh the facts and make observations along with you.. There were so few facts presented and so many nonsensical points of story based on people’s Facebook comments. Guys! In this day and age?.Why? Feeding the black/white motive is not a responsible way to pad the story. But! If the Internet says the darndest thing. The darndest thing is probably true! (30 min of research Into this case just confirmed that BLM rants are still more important then the evidence of a case) This is supposed to be true crime garage, not Gen Y. You guys don’t usually push social reform, over what is known or can be corroborated? Several times you prefaced that you weren’t doing that but stated that we all should consider racist fishermen as a possibility. Why? You never said.. Honestly not defending this guy, but if a bunch of people were threatening me via internet bulling and I responded with, “ I think all lives matter, but if anyone comes in my home and threatens my family I will shoot them” is a valid response. And not evidence of a motive of murder. I can see no reason for your coverage of this case other than to stoke racial tensions when there is honestly zero evidence to that. ( evidence of their being a racist is not evidenced of evil done. This simply not in line with your standard burden of proof. What are you guys doing? There are plenty of cases that you could present if you wanted to highlight racism as a current 2021 motive of murder. This case will never be solved. I am so sorry for our young hero and his family. Pointing out the potential racism will never clear the lack of facts. Especially when no one has any facts except for the confirmation of his death. I will leave you with this. I wish your coverage of this case concluded that the daughter’s birthday concluded with the racist father finding our victim and his daughter fooling around after her party once he got home and shot him for shooting his shot. Or the Bully with a trigger finger made his adversary pay the ultimate price. Suicide is also still a possibility. Unrequited love is a Teenage wasteland. I’ll take an off the wall theory any day, over a two hour report that confirms that nothing is known and we all need to think about racism. You guys are great journalists. And your fans want your opinions on every case, yet it is not responsible to present headlines like, “struggling student thrives against all odds only to have maybe racism end his potential future. Just saying

Wow! What a great addition to your 500+ episodes. I started this episode with the tried & true(?) belief that this was just another black youth senseless gun violence. By the end of the episode I was asking if "BLM" then why there aren't there more non-violent marches for this valued/loved Black Life? As a mother of 2 Black young men (one gentle giant and one social butterfly) my heart aches for Derontae family but mostly for Derontae himself. I wish I could have known you. As a football fan I wish I could have seen you play and sack someone. I wish my team 'Seattle Seahawks' could have scooped you up late in a draft and you could have seen the world outside of the little pin-point that is STL. I ask everyone, if you take the color of this young man's skin out of the equation how would you re-act. If two people lost their lives to suicide on the same property what questions would you demand be answered thoroughly and truthfully? Would it take it to be your child before you would yell BS in the streets everyday? What standard would you require you local police/sheriff dept. to uphold? ALL LIVES TRULY MATTER - TRULY ALL LIVES MATTER

The phone has the answer and I find it suspicious that the mother is not actively trying to retrieve the information that was deleted. All deleted information can be retrieved and the information on that phone is vital. Could it be that the information on the phone doesn’t support her narrative? Who was the friend that had the phone? How did the friend get the phone a few days after his death? What we find from that phone may be a surprise to us all.

Kinda stretching it with the whole race thing. Like the home owner yea this guy is a rasict pos that should be dragged out back, but at the start you mentions some kid at the party with prior charges. Why did you have to stress that persons race as it had little to no relevance to the case leading on. I dont know but I feel of you reversed the races and said some black kid with priors was at a party and based on rumor he's suspect would come of with bad taste(no evidence other than rumor) why even mention race at that point. 2021 o guess.

I doesn’t come up that Park Hills was only recently established— before that, it was called Flat River, which was an actual sundown town (google if you do t know what that is). The racism in that part of the state is TERRIBLE. This was a racially motivated murder.

As much as I don't like the guy, if he had shot Derontae, he says in the 911 call that Durante is still gasping for air, of we believe that then wouldn't it be wise to wait till he's already dead because if he were to survive he could point the finger at them if they did in fact kill him. So I'm leaning to believe him but I still think that it's very suspect as to how he passed I just don't know if the caller was actually involved.

I strongly believe this was foul play. Where are the crime scene photos? Where are the photos from the first autopsy? Is there a petition or somewhere to comment? This needs to go viral to hold authorities accountable. I also wonder, if drugs were involved, could it have been some type of dare or russian roulette?

Why cover a case that is literally 95 percent going off Facebook and rumors? The Captain hit on my theory. I bet a group of kids were upstairs, playing with a gun and an accident of some sorts happened. Would love to know what the paramedics on the scene would say, what was the temperature of the body. Where was the gun located? I definitely think there's a coverup, it's just the kids involved. If that's the case, someone is going to slip up and say something.

One possible scenario is that Derontae is hanging out with his friends at this house and the controlling ignorant narcissistic megaracist father returns home unexpectedly so they try to hide D in the attic but nothing will stop this irrational enraged homicidal man from hunting him down, murdering him, and coercing others to clean up/stage the scene. He may have been tipped off by phone by someone at the party. The daughter saying D wasn't even at the party could simply be an attempt to deflect her father's (terrifying) ire. Not diagnosing anyone or saying what happened, just speculating. Love to Derontae and his N&D

I went to school for computer twice (Masters). Part of my instruction includes computer forensics (I have certification as well). It would be possible to recover contact and text data from the phone but there's a number of factors that affect whether it's possible to pull the data off and if the data can be admissible in court. The family would need to do the following: 1. Create a chain of custody document to the best of their abilities - Who touched the phone, what actions were performed, when did this occur? 2. Take the phone to a qualified independent digital forensics professional 3. Place the phone in a specially sealed bag that prevents the phone from connecting to wireless signals (Wi-Fi and cellular) The forensics professional needs would do the following: 1. Connect the phone to a write-blocking device to prevent data tampering 2. Create a forensic image and verify through a hashing algorithm that it's a bit for bit copy including artifacts stored in volatile memory The professional would then be able to investigate any trace evidence left on the phone. Timing is absolutely critical though because the phone may overwrite any deleted data.

Worst episode in years! I'm inclined to say it's irresponsible to cover a case a few months old with mostly rumors to go off of. Wiping the phone isn't something one would do prior to suicide at a party. But you also wouldn't wipe a phone and return it to the parent if you just killed him. I don't understand what you expect that be on the phone. You don't premeditate a murder and decide to do it at a party in front of a crowd and shoot him a text invite! You spent 20 minutes complaining about not having more info...both from the police and the parents. That's not very entertaining on my end. Choose an older case next time. Thanks for the many, many enjoyable episodes!

Is the white supremacist an informant and being protected by police? If he’s a felon and they’ve found drugs or firearms in his home doesn’t that put him in immediately? If the party is protecting him they fear him probably? Just some thoughts.

Our family seek answer's as well. Such as how Derontae ended up @this house? We never received an official death notification. Derontae's dominant hand was in a full cast. We paid a forensic pathologist to do second autopsy her conclusion was Derontae was shot from at least 3 to 4 ft away. Why would he having his whole life of ahead of him go to someone else's house @ a party and kill himself. Most ppl who commit suicide don't do it at parties. We have heard rumors that the crime scene was tampered with on April 26,2021 Derontae's death was ruled suicide by Mcsd and Highway patrol. There's never been an investigation in my opinion. None of this makes sense. The answers we've been given just don't add up to suicide. Racism may or may not have been a factor in his demise. There's more facts on fb then in then in any report. Because we don't have the truth. I don't know factor the girl plays in the 911 call but she wasn't Derontae's girlfriend facts. JW stated in the interview with ksdk news that "I know I didn't do it" which is possibly true. But facts 💯he knows exactly what took place. The BLM protest wasn't for Derontae that happened several months before his death. We're not here to falsely accuse anyone. Our prayers are that someone will come forth and tell the whole truth. #JusticeforDerontaeMartin

I have suffered from chronic depression since I was a teenager and have tried to kill myself twice. I now work in the mental health field and I can promise you that people do not go to a stranger's house in order to die by suicide. Suicide is a very private matter, especially since there is such a stigma when it comes to the mentally ill. When someone truly wants to die, they normally don't advertise it to others or go out with friends so they can do it as someone else's house. The only way he might have done it is if he was drugged and in his altered state someone convinced him to do it. Still, the evidence clearly points to that fact the gun had never been pressed against his head and was fired three feet away. I'm sure if this poor kid had been white an arrest would have been made already.

Regarding Derontae's personal belongings - I'm not clear on what the deal is with Derontae's wallet. Did the police say they have the wallet and are refusing to return it? Or are they saying they don't have it? I had a similar experience. When it comes to personal items there's a huge communication gap between the police, EMS, the hospital, and the funeral home. Apparently, the funeral home is responsible for returning the items that belonged to the deceased. However, the police confiscated my child's phone and did not return it to me for several days. I have no idea why. The bag that had the rest of the items that were returned from the funeral home was missing: the wallet, sunglasses, and a few other small items. No one could tell me where they were. It took me several days to figure out that they were locked away in a safe in the Security Office at the hospital. I'm wondering if Derontae's mom contacted Security at the hospital where Derontae was taken to see if his wallet is there? But if the police have it I don't know what to say other than: corruption. But it looks like that's a given anyway.

I listened to part 1 and 2 of this case. I have to say at first these were not my favorite episodes (I have listed to all). I started reading the comments and saw others posting that there was not enough facts to have you guys cover this case and started to agree and then I realized that is exactly why it needed to be covered. We are a True Crime family and need to be voices for those who no longer have a voice. It is easy for law enforcement to ignore the family or push off concerns of it being a family not wanting to accept the truth but it is hard to ignore a community demanding answers. Thank you Nic and Captain for taking on these cases and getting them known to the True Crime army. I hope Derontae's family will get the answers they deserve.

Maybe I misheard, as no one else seemed to comment on this, but uh, during the 911 call did the girl in the background say "I hate this"? Because that doesn't seem like something you say when discovering a suicide. Wouldn't that be more like something you say when you're covering up something? And I actually laughed when Wade said "they're accusing me of being a racist serial killer" because that was my first thought by the end of that 911 call in the beginning. Also, law enforcement has no business posting ANYTHING on their Facebook pages. Why the hell do they even have Facebook pages? Facebook is entertainment at best, not a legitimate platform. If everyone is so afraid to come out and say anything about what happened that night then which member of law enforcement (or their child) was involved in it? Because why else would they hop straight to suicide. That's the known don't ask/don't tell/don't investigate/case closed answer. Thanks for shining light on this case, guys!!!

First off there are several things not mentioned that are actually facts. #1 James Wade submitted to a polygraph test and passed. #2 Deronte's own family was feeding him ecstasy for a whole week before he even went to Fredericktown. #3 The police left the scene to be cleaned up by the those left at the scene, they do not clean the scene when they are done with it. No cleanup happened prior to police arrival. #4 Deronte laid in the morgue on a table for 2 weeks before the privately paid autopsy was performed. #5 Deronte was in a closet, actually an HVAC access closet, when he shot himself. #6 The other people are not responding to people demanding they give public statements because people that don't know what they are talking about have thrown out names and made accusations that are not true and caused these people to have their lives threatened, names slandered, businesses where they work vandalized, these young people are walking the edge of suicide themselves because of the raw gossip that has been made up and embellished for the sake of drama over this tragedy. The least you could do is post the facts and stop spreading the false narrative of racism which is what definitely not the case.

To those who take issue with the lack of BLM outcry surrounding black on black youth gun violence, I (speaking begrudgingly as a white dude) would suggest you might consider that BLM is a platform that aims to solidify the truth that black lives matter to groups outside of black communities. It's an expression of perceived marginalization. And I for myself can see how the origin of those feelings is real from some 400 years ago and still exists today. I hope that everyone is able to get to a place where they understand the truth and validity in those feelings. But the issue you raise is separate from that, why does BLM only seem to care about white people killing black people and not black people killing black people? I feel a certain way answering that question for outside of the community but if you can forgive my speculation I'll tell you that I'm confident when I say that that issue matters to them VERY much. Maybe even more than the social justice issues they highlight with their main stage. Have you really gotten to a place where you believe black people don't care when black people are killed by black people? Perhaps you feel hurt when people say, "Black Lives Matter" because you personally never said they didn't. Dial it back out from your personal experiences and feelings and try to acknowledge that there is good reason that those words have never held the truth they deserve. And the reason for not marching to promote black lives in response to a black person (likely a child) killing another black person (also likely a child) is that that would weaken the statement because it would appear to uplift the value lost in the death of one black person at the expense of another black person, furthermore a child. I think it's challenging for a community to try and express their worth as a whole by parading the instances where the members of that community fell victim to believing that they were worthless, expendable et al. And rather aim to address those issues that exist within the community, within the community and save their geo platform for issues that illustrate the bigger picture. If it hurts your feelings then I think you might have misunderstood. If you want all lives to matter then the response to, "Black Lives Matter" isn't, "all lives matter" I've decided my response is, "I know." And I hope I live up to that.

@ Disgusted - thank you for posting but we can only mention FACTS when we are aware of them. To review... #1 - that's great but means little. Wade does not have to be the killer first off and regardless if he is or is not - if he feels no remorse or justified in his actions or the actions of others he would "pass" the test. #2 This seems incredibly untruthful - however if there is a legit source for this info than share it. #3 of course LE does not clean up the scene - we were pointing out that the scene MAY have been cleaned or altered before 911 was called, this is very common. #4 - that is understood and we presented that as such. The results of the 2nd autopsy are still the findings by the examiner, regardless. #5 He was he found in a closet when responders arrived? How do you KNOW this? #6 That is understood and I fully accept that and if it is an actual suicide I wish them no ill will and hope that people can let these people try to move on with there lives. In regards to the racism - we did not make up those racist online posts, Wade did and he is a racist. I don't agree with you on some of these issues however I do appreciate your post and if you have more to offer I hope we can keep the conversation going. I'm not above the belief that I do have more to learn about this particular situation and hope that I can. Thanks Nic

Whenever the two conflicting scenarios are a murder that makes no sense or a suicide that makes no sense, I go with suicide. Right 99 times out of 100, at least.

There are times when I feel you guys go overboard with condemning strangers on scant information, and this is one of them. You take a posture of moral superiority against "racism" in this episode that is trite, cliche, lame, and just part of a social media pile on. You know nothing about Wade and his character. Let's leave it at that.

Cases like this one really piss me off. When I heard the trailer in episode 1, I thought the guy calling 911 could give a shit about the person that supposedly committed suicide in his home. And he didn't know if he was breathing? WTF? Shame on EVERYONE that attended the party but won't come forward. And the phone being wiped clean? Again, WTF? If I had to guess, I would say that it was a while before the police were called. And what weapon was used? Or did I miss that detail? Did he have GSR on either hand? Or did the police just forego that because everyone in the household said it was a suicide. This case is SO F'd up. Add it to the list of cases that have been seriously under-investigated. It's sad that another black life ended at the hands of gun violence. And f@$@ Wade...we can't tell he is racist by the photos and propaganda he posts at his Facebook page? I am so tired of the shit people post online and then hide behind it. Love the show. Hope this family can get some closure and justice.
