Hey Captain! Regarding your GREAT intro music today, I'm loving that you pulled in the end of Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - A Day in the Life. I had the CD as an 8th grader and that ending always creeped me out. It's just abit obscure, so I thought it was neat the way you made it musical... and only a little bit less creepy for me! Salud!

Thanks for doing these episodes, guys. My father is the biggest John Lennon fan and I was able to share your show with him. Love the included interviews and new clips, thanks for doing what you do.
Stay safe out there!

Mark David Chapman looks like Ricky from Better Off Dead.
Mark David Chapman looks like Ricky from Better Off Dead.
Very entertaining show. Quite different as it dealt heavily with rock history and the culture of America in earlier decades, instead of the facts of a crime. As for Chapman, he was mentally broken, period. There was nothing about Lennon or his actions that motivated Chapman to do what he did. Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book ever, loved it since I read it in high school. Holden is not violent in anyway, he has no desire to hurt or kill people. All these things that we have analyzed for decades as the reason he did what he did are just attempts to rationalize why an insignificant person was able to take the life of such a significant person. What motivated Oswald, Sirhan, etc. They were just broken machines that wanted fame and had only one way of getting it, taking the life of someone greater than themselves. For selfish reasons, I am glad that Bowie was not the primary target, because for my money, his work far exceeded that of Lennon's. However, nobody can minimize the pain and suffering worldwide caused by Chapman. I also believe that Chapman will probably forever pose a threat to society, so just keep him locked up. Ignore the haters and keep on keeping on, guys.

Thanks mG! Yes, MDC way too dangerous to be out. As soon as he feels weak or insignificant he will start looking for a new target. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been caught with a hit list while in lock up.
Cheers and we of course will keep on keeping on. We are getting all jazzed up for the new year. Looking to do some exciting stuff in 2021 - wanting to "SHAKE IT UP" a little!
Cheers Nic

As always, a well researched review of the crime.

I respect the Beatles for their innovations, but the music sucked and was really corny...the David Bowie angle was fascinating, had never heard that. Good episode, I like the ones where y'all speculate on who done it though.
I know yall get a ton of recommendations. Here is mine, Tom Brown from Canadian, Tx. Check it out, crazy unsolved story, would love to hear y'alls take on it. Keep up the great work and cheers! Ya'll get me thru some rough days.

My mom hates that I listen to/read/watch true crime media, but I learned so much from these episodes that I had to ask both of my parents if they were watching Monday Night Football when that announcement was made, and/or how they found out. They’d been married for about six months and I wasn’t born until 1984. My dad didn’t remember how he learned, but my mom did, and wanted to talk about it. Then she asked what made me wonder and I told her you guys had covered it. She listened to both episodes and truly raved about you. We both learned a lot about Lennon. Neither of us had realized (or remembered) how old Chapman was—he was no Holden Caulfield. In fact, neither of us had ever thought of this murder as a crime—just a tragedy. She admired your message about mental health awareness. We remembered seeing Mr. Holland’s Opus together when I was a teenager and how I didn’t understand why it took her such a long time to start the car before we left the theater. I don’t see her becoming a regular listener, but thanks for doing something just a little different that helped my mom and I bond!

Hi Emily,
What I love so much about the story you shared is the conversations with Mom and Dad. It's always so unique to get their perspectives on things and their experience in regards to this world news events.
My father is kind of a tough guy but it's amazing to see how soft he gets at just the mention of 1968. I can tell that the assassinations of both Dr. King and RFK are still major moments of tragedy for him from his younger years. It's important to not forget these tragedies and important to remember that smart, brilliant, and good people shape our lives. And we have the power to not let bad, evil, and selfish people shape our lives.
Cheers Nic

Huge fan of your show, long time subscriber on Podcast Addict. Was never much of a Beatles fan, so this brought a different perspective about John Lennon to me.
That bumper music though, I had to skip ahead through it each time. It was horrible IMHO.
Keep up the great podcasts.

I remember clearly the day the news came out that Lennon was murdered, it was very tragic. Unfortunately I was never a big Beatles fan so the whole history back story is lost on me. I am going to skip this episode as well. You're still my regular go-to for true crime stories.

Beatles fan - not a requirement to enjoy this true-crime perspective. This is simply a stalker case, tragic but fascinating at the killer's delusions and obsessions. John was sadly the victim of a very sick loser.

I normally don’t care to listen to anything about the death of J.L but you guys really did a great job on this. It was clear this was a subject the Captain enjoyed. He spoke more than usual and I loved the music. You impressed me with an episode I was going to skip over.

@ Christina - Awesome, that is a huge goal for us putting together the shows. We of course always strive to put out informative and entertaining shows but even more difficult to do if the subject matter does not immediately spark an interest. So glad you enjoyed it. Even though it is solved there is still a good deal of mystery and questions in Lennon's so very senseless murder. Heard Paul McCartney on Howard Stern this week and they briefly spoke about the 40 year anniversary of the murder - got to me a bit. Sad stuff.
