The Tylenol Murders /// 480 /// 481

Part 1 of 2

www.TrueCrimeGarage.com

This week we explore an unsolved case out of the Chicago area. Back in the early 80’s the Tylenol Murders became the most extensively covered news event since the assassination of JFK. In just three days, seven people died all exhibiting the same symptoms. Symptoms that pointed to cyanide poisoning as the cause.

I was home from school the day this news broke, I believe 8th grade or so, I remember going to the cabinet to look at the Tylenol I had injected, sure enough it was lot # 2880 as well. I called my mom and asked her what to do and she said if I was talking to her, that means I didn’t get the tainted pills, so just throw out the bottle. She was a common sense kinda mom. Then fast forward 25+ years I’m working for my brother at his gas station and I’m introduced to the father of 4 that lost Lynn 4 days after she gave birth! Small world

I just have to say that your timing is perfect, given J&J's current problems with its vaccine. No doubt the vaccine issues - manufacturing and the blood clots - are the company's worst PR disaster since the Tylenol murders.

Sounds like international revenge for some shady things big Pharma may have done. I know female murderers usually kill people they know but I’m betting it was a female who went into the stores. There is a reason not to give intel on man standing behind the victim; he is not from US. What happened in the late 70s or early 80s that involved Johnson and Johnson and a small group of people in another country?

Did you say whether the main suspect (or the guy that checks way too many boxes not to be the Murderer) looked anything like the guy in the ATM photo they had?

So, did the FBI ever get Ted Kasynski's DNA?!

  • At the time, I had just started my first year of art school. I lived in the suburbs not far from some of these murders. Right before these murders started there was a railway strike so getting into the Chicago Loop was crazy. So it was like the whole area was falling apart, very stressful and scary. Thanks for covering this, so much I didn’t know about the case! Cheers guys!

Thank you for covering this story. I have only listened to 15 minutes so far and already have several comments. I will just give one for now. The Tymurs book you referenced by Scott Bartz is the real story. I am a victim's daughter. If you have read Tymurs or The Tylenol Mafia: Marketing, Murder and Johnson & Johnson, you will understand why this case is still unsolved and why the lone-nut-going-store-to-store narrative is what is emphasized. Corporate liability is key here. If you would like to contact me before Part 2 is released, send me a message through my website tylenolmurders.com Thank you again for covering this top-unsolved crime of the century.

Where do hospitals purchase their over the counter medications? If the new mother received hers from the hospital, could the poisoner work at a hospital where he had access to their stock of Tylenol? I know there is no confirmation she received it from the hospital, but where else would she have gotten it? Maybe he stole all of the Tylenol bottles from the hospital or the pharmacy he worked at and was able to manipulate them that way and then place them on local store shelves. Hopefully they checked out all of the pharmacy and hospital workers.

Hello True Crime Garage and fellow listeners. I happen to come up with a theory of my own. Going back to the mother who had just given birth and was given extra strength Tylenol from the hospital. My mind thinks that whoever had contact with that medicine is the person behind all this. I believe that she was the perfect intended victim whether that be personal or spur of the moment. Than realizing that the capsules had a “x” amount of time before becoming visibly tampered with the killer knew they had time to mess with the pharmacy Tylenol.

Could it be a disgruntled employee who had suggested that the medication should be tamper proof and his or her idea was just ignored? So they tainted the pills to prove a point.
